Quite an odd one about cakes...

GregorsGirl60, 30 October, 2012 at 21:41 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hello all,

We are have been thinking about creating our own cake - both because of what we like and because we want it to be eaten. So we have come up with the idea of having a three tier cake (so far so normal) but with the bottom tier as sponge, the middle as a wheel of cheese and the top tier as fruitcake. Once we cut it we were going to get the venue to cut it all up, get some crackers so the guests can all eat sponge, cheese and biscuits and fruitcake.

However, the only stumbling block has been where to source the cheese from - I would love yorkshire cheese as that is where i am from, but we would also like it to be waxed so it looks like a normal cake from afar.

So does anyone have any ideas about where we can get a whole wheel of waxed cheese, without breaking the bank?

Told you it was an odd one!

Thanks in advance!

You won't be able to stack fruitcake and cheese on top of sponge, it's just too heavy. It will work as cheese, then fruit, then sponge though. We had 2 cakes, one sponge, one cheese, and the cheese (4 tiers) was so heavy it took 2 blokes to lift!

I too was going to say you cant put heavier things on the sponge. If you used a tiered cake stand (see pic), you could have any layer on any level as the weight of the cake/cheese is supported by the stand.

Are you having the sponge & fruit layers iced, then just having the wax of the cheese on show? Or are you going to try icing the cheese wax to look like the rest of the cake?

You can get polystyrene in the shape of a cake. This can be iced to look like the rest of the cakes. (I did this as a 3 tiered cake was too big for the amount of guests). You could have the cheese in the kitchen & it could still be served with the cakes.

Where in the country are you? Smithfield meat market in London have whole, waxed cheese wheels in one of the delis there. No ideas of prices though but they are cheaper than other places I've found for bries & other cheese. Have you looked at neals cheese yard (which sells online) or borough market, London?

I think this is a great idea but just bare in mind the weight issue that others have mentioned.

    For cheese

    Neal's yard https://www.nealsyarddairy.co.uk/

    or cheese shed https://www.thecheeseshed.com/

    Love the idea!

Again so long as it is stacked right you will be fine.

I'm also from Yorkshire - how about this place?

If they can't help with the cheese you particularly want, I'm sure they will be able to let you know where you could get it from.

I would be a bit worried that the cheesy flavour would leach into the other cakes if it's touching them ?
