Quite cross with florist quote - suggestions or rudeness?

MrsMac2be, 11 February, 2014 at 13:31 Posted on Planning 0 13

We visited a potential florist early January, we sat down with her and we told her exactly what we wanted -

White rose, white freesia and plenty of greenery in a hand tied for myself and my 4 adult BM's

We couldn't decide what we wanted for the flower girl so left that as a maybe

5 x freesia buttonholes

10 x martini glass arrangements with the same flowers as above

And a top table arrangement.

Te quote came and had all the above BUT all with added Singapore orchids (apparently, quite expensive flowers) and she also added on the following, which we didn't even discuss, they werent even extra overs, just added into the quote..

2 x pedestal arrangements

2x speaker arrangements.... Seriously?

And a wishing tree to hire at £60 (I've been to Hobbycraft and got one for £30)!

All for the princelysum of £1,015.00!!

Sorry, had to let that rant out...

For what she quoted for I'd say that's average priced.

Like you said, it is really cheeky to have things added especially the Japanese orchids!

Have you gone back to them and asked why they added those things?

They obviously cannot follow instructions very well, so I wouldn't risk giving them my business! Id go somewhere else. x

Maybe she's got emailed you someone else's quote? I would ring her & point it out to her that there are things on the quote that you hadnt asked for. It may be a simple error......if its not, I would get a quote from somewhere else.

Did you check if it was just a mistake? Perhaps she didn't write things down properly and then just took a guess? Ask for another (correct) quote within 3 working days, remind her what you discussed and then if she doesn't come up with the goods, look elsewhere. You don't want suppliers who you can't rely on!

I'd just contact her back and ask her to remove the extra's and see how it goes from there.

Have you checked it just wasn't a mistake on her part (ok not the best, but it happens) instead of her deliberately trying to add things you don't want in an attemp to rip you off (this I very much doubt).

I presume you contacted her as soon as you received the quote, what did she say?

When I spoke to my florists, we discussed things and she made suggestions - but then she quoted me for what we decided on, not with added extras on top. It may be a simple mix up of information for another quote. Either get back to her, politely tell her that you prefer arrangements without the Singapore orchids, and will not been needing the added extras and ask for a new quote, or find yourself another florist who is able to quote for what you want.

There is a difference between making suggestions and quoting for more than what was discussed

Apologies, yes I replied to her email as soon as I got up off the floor..... Haha

She told me that the table arrangements needed bulking out so chose the orchids, I suggest to her that she may have liked to come back to me if she felt that they needed bulking out so that we could discuss the way forward.

I did give her a chance to re-quote but this was early last week and I've heard nothing yet but she maybe busy with valentines coming up so will give her the benefit of the doubt for a few more days.

She should have contacted you to say that the table arrangements needed something additional, or at the very least put a note on the quote explaining the additional cost (pending your agreement). It's pretty cheeky to do it with very expensive flowers too!

What did she say about the extra stuff on the invoice?

I'd definately cut her some slack just now, Valentine's being one of their busiest times.

Absolutely agree that she is likely to be busy this week, however its not for her to decide that to put in YOUR arrangements. I don't think it would hurt for you to contact other florists for quotes (even though they too will be busy, but at least you'll be getting the wheels in motion).

I don’t know if it’s normal for florists to do that, but ours did! She did however send through a document that listed everything and the price for each individual thing so I just went back to her and reconfirmed exactly what we wanted, minus her added suggestions. Hopefully yours just did it trying to be helpful, once I re-clarifyed what we wanted she didn’t try and further sales pitch etc!

Singapore orchids are a very expensive 'filler' !! I'd get a couple of other quotes from different florists as suggested.

I got quotes from 2 florists and one of them did this. She was very pushy and added in extras that I didn't for. I then went to a second florist who was a lot happier to make some amendments and show me different options on how to bring the price down. I felt a lot more confident that I wasn't being ripped off.

if that's the first quote you have had then I would definitely shop around some more. I work in purchasing and the rule us to never take the first quote you get.

    good luck
