Radiator screens - Yay or Nay?

Pickled Eggs, 8 March, 2009 at 19:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I am in the process of decorating my hallway and landing and my Mum mentioned about getting a radiator screen to smarten the hallway, I have had a look at some and I quite like the idea but not sure if they are a bit dated. What do you think ?

I think it depends on the age of the property and or the type of screen.

If you use the radiator to heat the house then I'd say no as they sheild a lot of the heat and prevent the natural convection current. Leads to higher energy bills and a larger carbon footprint.

If they are always switched off then I like them in hallways.

As MBK said it really depends on the age and style of your house and also what the radiator screen might look like. We have them in our house but it works well as it's over 300 years old and has the age and character to fit with the screens. I'm sure they do block out a certain amount of heat but the house would look a bit daft with exposed radiators around the place.

I've often wondered if they let the heat circulate freely. Personally, I can't see what's wrong with radiators. House doctor always used to annoy me with her hatred of radiators-as if people who came to look at a house wouldn't be expecting to see them! For the price of some of the ones she used, you could change your radiators to funky/heritage type ones anyway which would be much more my preference. I'd absolutely love something like this in our bathroom-the little taps are fab!

I would love to change the radiator I really would but I can't afford that. I have seen some funky designs online that are quite reasonable for screens. I don't like having the radiators too high, I am not a cold bum unlike my H. The house is 9 years old but is not modern.

Thank you for your thoughts, I shall think about them ?

I've got them in my house which is 1930s. One is a made-to-measure one from Jali.co.uk and the others are from B&Q. I like the fact that having the cabinet also creates a little shelf for storage.

    Jali claim the following:

Does a radiator cover waste the heat emitted by my radiator?

No. In fact the innovative Jali design means that cold air is drawn in at the gap at the bottom and pushed through the vent in the top. This means that heat comes into the room rather than straight up the wall, collecting at ceiling level.

If your radiator is under a window, this prevents the heat from going up behind the curtains and being wasted.

We've got them in a couple of rooms where the radiators are really prominent, ie you open the door and the radiator is right opposite.

We've got a modern house so picked a fairly modern cover so I think it goes well.

Have you fitted the pipes hidden as in the pic? Looks like a messy replastering job.

Nope, the pipes were fitted so they match the style of the radiator - have enough building work going on without another wall out of action!
