Radio station question

SophieM, 1 January, 2009 at 19:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

One of my Christmas prezzies was a little radio for the kitchen. I've never listened to the radio in the UK, would you believe - I don't have a car, we listen to iTunes at work, and my ex used to have Radio 5 Live on 24/7, and I hated it. So, what stations are good for what, and where do I find them? ?

Radio 4. I've heard that other radio stations exist, but I don't hold with such frivolity.

Is it a DAB radio? 6 Music is ace - a really eclectic mix of music.

    I like xfm: https://www.radiox.co.uk/

or Absoute which use to be Virgin: www.absoluteradio.co.uk but both have adverts.

I also like radio 4 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live/bbc_radio_fourfm which I listen to during the daytime. Lots of interesting current affairs stuff, serialise plays and dramas and documentries.

I'm another Radio 4 fan and have it on pretty much all the time I'm in the house. It's talk radio rather than music radio so not sure if that's what you are looking for.

If you happened to be at home from 1 to 4 Monday to Friday, I would urge you to give 5Live another go and listen to Simon Mayo's show, particularly on a Friday from 3 for Mark Kermode's film reviews.

Otherwise I tend to listen to Radio 2 quite a lot and really should listen to more of Radio 4.

I was always a big Capital Radio fan (95.8 FM), and even now tune in via their website occasionally, but it's off-putting listening to the afternoon show when it's morning for me here.

Radio 2 is music, yes. It's got younger in recent years; it used to be all "Sing Something Simple" and concert programmes featuring the mighty wurlitzer from Blackpool Tower.

Radio Scotland, which is no help to you...! Other than that, we listen to Radio 2

My day's listening is pretty much the following

6:30-10am - Moyles (funny links, shame about the music)

    10-1pm - 6 music

1-4 - Mayo on 5 live drive (he is a broadcasting genius and as Hazel says, Friday's with Mark Kermode are brilliant)

4-5 - First hour of 5 live drive as Peter Allen is a brilliant grumpy old man and I get to sound knowledgeable about current affairs after listening

5 onwards - Chris Evans on Radio 2.

Totally gone off Radio 2 before Evans. Wogan is a tired old cliche, Ken Bruce is dull, Jeremy Vine is becoming more vacuous by the day and Steve Wright needs to be shot and melted down for glue.

Radio 4. All my conversations start with "I heard on Radio 4 the other day..." It gives me gravitas.

As an aside, I want to kill Jeremy Vine with a sharpened pencil. Right through the eye and into the brain stem. Irritating little twunt.
