Rainy wedding photos- OM/ TOG flashes?

irrelephant, 8 June, 2012 at 17:01 Posted on Planning 0 46

With all this rain going on at the moment i'm getting more and more worried about it raining on the day. I know that by the end of august it might be a really lovely weekend, however, in an attempt to prepare myself I've been looking for brollies and wellies etc.

Do any OM's or TOG's want to flash some rainy wedding day photos for me to show me that all won't be lost if it does rain? Both indoor and outdoor photos welcome!

I just went through all my weddings to try and find one photo of it raining. I have shot weddings where it has rained but i've always made it look like it isn't if that makes sense? ?. I wouldn't directly position the couple in the rain.

For example, it was raining heavily at this wedding but it doesn't look like it. I would always position the couple under something.

It rained on my friends wedding day and they just got lots of pics inside or just outside the building so they looked outside but were protected by the eaves of the building so didn't get quite so wet!

They had bought lots of clear umbrellas in preparation when they saw the forecast so they made a feature of them and got them in a few of the pics.

    But it will be sunny!!!

Thank you irrelephant, it was a gorgeous day otherwise!!

Where they were walking with their backs to me, that is where we were making a dash for it back indoors from the archways ?

These were wet weather weddings.....we just tend to try to find a break in the weather! Umbrellas are old too, we did a wedding a few weeks ago that was rainy and used them as a feature, but haven't got them to show off yet as the client hasn't seen them!

Bec thanks for sharing, lovely photos.

Have just looked up Drifter's Report and it is stunning. I also made the mistake of looking up the reading they had in their ceremony and now am blubbing. Its so perfect for D and I but we can't have it in our ceremony. I wonder if I can get someone to read it during the speeches.

It rained on/off during our wedding day... we did seem to get lucky and it didn't rain when we were outside (mostly).

There's a much better version of the below photo, where we're all smiling nicely, and you can see more of the umbrella. My mum has it framed on her mantelpiece, but for some reason it isn't online, so you'll have to imagine. That's me, my H and the best man holding the umbrella:

We also had our formals inside, by choice, I liked the building and didn't want to have outdoor formals (and hey, if it's good enough for Wills and Kate...!)

Ta! Honestly, I was so worried about rain before the day and developed a bit of a compulsion to check the long-range weather forecasts every day. But, even though it did rain, it was fine. Actually I'm glad now as the rain kept the heat down and it was a perfect temperature!

I'm so annoyed. I saw a great photographer's blog post of a rainy wedding early in my planning - can I remember where to find it?! I remember thinking it was fantastic. Will have a search.

we are marrying in a hotel so no problems with arrivals etc but would be such a shame not to be able to get some photos in the beautiful grounds

At early discussions with couples, I talk about wet weather scenarios as its best to have this fallback position in mind rather than scrambling to think what to do on the day. For church weddings, I suggest that the couple ask the vicar well in advance if the church can be used. Unless they have another wedding this isn't normally a problem, although being asked in advance IS important. For civil ceremonies, many venues will have a spare room and many will allow the use of this without any extra cost IF asked in advance.

Fortunately wet weather is not the norm. There are usually dry periods throughout the day when getting outside is possible. I have only "lost" one full days wedding in 30 years to rain(it was an August!!!!) On that occasion, I put the couple under the covered walkway between the hotel and function room and shot the garden as the background.....it worked really well as the colours were pastel and the couple were really pleased with the end product.

Below is an example of taking advantage of breaks in the rain. Despite the shaft of sunlight, 60 seconds after this shot we were sheltering from the rain under a tree. The MC was standing by to rescue us with umbrellas....

I had a bit of a wet wedding photo google...

You can get some pretty cool shots in the rain... but rest assured either way, it will not ruin your day!

Thanks so much. Peter, that shot is so beautiful. Thanks for all the advice. We have a room we can use at the reception venue for a couple of posed group photos if it rains. Its sun room, like an orangery and is very light and bright. I think i'm also going to get one or two nice brollies so that we can maybe get some nice outdoor portraits of myself and D. There are lots of trees etc too we can probably shelter under.

Mrs C I saw some of those photos on google last night, and thought they were lovely. I think my TOG will be able to capture stuff like that, so there's hope!

Thanks?....I managed a quick set here with the bride on her own and sitting on the ground before the rains came.....It's worth asking your tog to have a towel that can be discretely hidden for any sitting shots to avoid getting wet, although still getting the shots.....Preparation is everything....

The towel, a plastic bag to wrap it in if its very wet and a pair of secateurs.....just in case a bit of foliage offends the desired picture...?

I might as well post you my pictures next week as looks like we're gonna get rain [:'(] not the end of the world OH keeps telling me. I would just really like to have our drinks reception outside as planned, and not ruin my expensive shoes or the bottom of my dress!
