Random boring question

Meltdown, 16 January, 2014 at 19:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

Does your front or back door open into the house or out?

Our back door is the main entrance to the house and opens into the kitchen. When it have been raining it drips water all over the floor in the kitchen and drives me nuts.

OH says all doors open into the house but I am sure that you can get doors that open outwards even if they are less common.

Ours opens in, and I can't think of anywhere I've lived that's opened outwards - sorry!

Ours open onwards but you can get doors that open outwards. You can spot them as the hinges are on the outside.

Front door opens in and French doors at the back open out.

You can definitely get doors that open out though

In this house both our front and back doors open in. On our old house, the back door opened out. I always thought that it was a bit random!

I don't think I've ever seen a front door that opens out. I've seen plenty of back doors that do though.

Mine open in. My Aunts front door opens out. Not good for people who knock on the door, as they get hit with the door when it is opened, haha.

Front door opens in, back door opens out (it's a bi-fold window door)

All interior walls open in to the room you go into.

I also don't think I've ever seen a front door than opened out.

Both the main door to our block and our flat door open inwards. I think my back door opened outwards in my uni house but I can't really remember!

Our front door opens inwards, our two sets of a French windows to garden open outwards.

At my Mum's, both are regular doors and open inwards. I can't recall a regular back door that opened outwards in any house I've lived in.

What's all this about interior doors opening into the room? Presumably you are talking about interior doors from hall/landing and not an interior door between two rooms Smiley winking

Do you mean to say you don't have the special doors that change the way they open depending on what room you're in?! ;-)

All of our internal doors open inwards (except the one between the kitchen and living room which opens inwards into the kitchen!)

Both ours open inwards, however my parents' back door opens into the garden.

not all our interior doors open inward...our toilet door for our downstairs toilet opens outwards. It's the only one that does, though. I am wracking my brain to think of a front door that opens outwards, but I don't think I've ever seen one. Porch doors, sure, but not actual front doors.

Just a thought but if a door opens outwards would it make it easier for someone to barge their way in? It's easier for you to push a door shut than the pull it shut? Also if the hinges are on the outside would that make it easier for someone to break in? Because they could damage the hinge in some way?

AFM all my doors open inwards from the hallway/house expect the bathroom - not sure why that is (and I just had to go and check to make sure it wasn't just in my head)

Where there's space they tend to do this with bathroom esp if it's small to give you more room. Our bathroom is tiny and still has an inward opening door meaning if we're both in there at the same time to clean our teeth and one of us wants to get out we have to do a weird shuffle dance so we can open the door.

My front door opens inwards, my back door is a sliding one, which is ridiculously stiff!

In my family home, the back door opened outwards.

Is the inward thing a safety/access thing. Easier for firemen to break a door down inwards?

I've never really thought about this but, our front door opens in. Our back door (onto the balcony) opens in. The door in our bedroom onto the other balcony opens out.

All the internal doors open into the room you're entering, except the bathroom doors.

I wonder if there's a reason for this?!

You can definitely get front doors that open out, my neighbour had one but my concern would be security I think in terms of opening the door and potentially trying to get it closed again in a hurry. Not to mention the amount of people you'll hit with it because they don't realise it opens towards them!

Internal doors will open which ever way it will fit, so for example our downstairs toilet door opens out because it's so small there isn't room for it to open in. But most other doors will open into the room because there is more space for it to do that. I'm not sure if this makes sense or not but I know what I mean!

Our front door opens inwards. We don't have a back door.

I agree with others that front doors are safer to open inwards so you can use your chain or jam them with your foot to stop someone entering.

My OH is a builder and he says most new builds have to have bathroom doors that open outwards. This is because if someone collapses you could still get in (bathrooms tend to be small and if someone is lying on the floor behind the door you wouldn't be able to open it). Ours opened outwards, but when we moved in we made the bathroom bigger and changed it to open inwards. There are different rules that affect doors though - like they shouldn't open out at the top of the stairs.

Our front door open inwards and our back door opens outwards. Annoyingly it is hard to close as it opens this way and at the moment is swollen from all of the rain we have had

Thanks everyone. I do understand the security issues and to be honest we wont be changing the door anytime soon. It does drive me potty with all the rain we have been having! we have a door mat down but it is not big enough
