Random Q: Would you leave your engagement ring at home whilst on honeymoon and wear a FAKE?

Little Madam, 2 October, 2010 at 09:49 Posted on Planning 0 28

I have just been looking at some travel tips for honeymooners and found this under the womens essentials:

Fake diamond engagement ring (leave the real one in a safety-deposit box till you return)

Wearing a fake diamond engagement ring on your travels can give you peace of mind if you leave your valuable rings at home for safekeeping. The best fake engagement rings are designed to closely resemble real engagement rings in stone and setting. If you want a fake engagement ring that will fool just about everyone but a jeweler with a loupe, choose one where the size of the "diamond" is within the realm of credibility, and the setting is simple and classic.

Really? I can't imagine not wearing mine? Is this person mad or has anyone considered this?

I think they're mad. You can lose your rings or have them stolen anywhere not just on honeymoon. Another one for the bonkers hall of bonkers fame I say.

So am I correct in thinking that she is more worried about her engagement ring than her wedding ring? And all that aside, isn't that why you have insurance. Strange, very strange. Mine won't be leaving my finger.

Oh now I asked this question leading up to my wedding and I got a bit of a verbal kicking lolol. I was thinking of getting a fake and oh, the outrage, lolol

as mentioned it could be stolen anywhere etc.......

I think one girl was heading for south africa who said she wouldnt be flashin hers about...... as people have been robbed before etc...

I ended up wearing mine with pride and didnt worry about it once. Smiley smile

I am sure my travel insurance would cover them if they were taken - as it cover any item worth up to £1,500 individually.

I just can't imagine having my wedding day, and then having the cheek to check into my room on honeymoon asking for the honeymoon package wearing no rings! haha.

Teehee - I can see why you'd be worried, jus had a read of the "how much did your ring cost" post and another hitcher said she left hers at home too. I am praying ours will be OK though.

OH might swap for a cheaper one when and not wear it on his wedding finger when he is in working in Afghanistan as we are having an engraving on there and he would never wear anything which might link him to me (in words) / could be used against him in an interrigation situation (knowing he has a wife) but for a holiday, they will be staying on!

I left mine at home when we went away in May. My ring cost a lot of money and I was scared to loose it. I have a habit of taking it off tho when i have a shower etc so i was too scared that i'd take it off and leave it in the room and get broken into or for some reason it slipping off in the pool. But thats just me. Depends where ur going too. Europe i would, but other countries with a higher crime rate no. Jsut me tho. I know im weird taking my rings off. I rarely have them on at home, and dont at the moment

Hey! So i just got engagement a few months ago and my fiance bought me a stunning James Allen ring. I don't think I will take it on my honeymoon, simply b/c I think it's better to be safe than sorry. I can handle a week with out my engagement ring and I'd rather leave it safely locked up at home. It's true, there are no guarantees in life, but I'd rather not take the risk of loosing my diamond and sapphire engagement ring! Those are my thoughts...?

I wouldn't personally, but I can perhaps understand why people would want to leave their rings at home. What I don't understand is why would you buy a fake one to wear instead? As I'm sure is the case for most, I'll certainly have other things to spend the extra money on closer to the wedding! Plus, if you're really that worried about your ring being stolen (can't say it's something that worrying me), why would you then make yourself a target and potentially risk putting yourself in a dangerous situation for the sake of wearing a fake? Any would-be thief would still have a go - they wouldn't know it wasn't the real thing until they'd got their grubby mitts on it.

I took mine with me and locked them in the safe when I needed to take it off. It was perfectly alright. I think there's more chance of me losing them here anyway because I take them off more.

To be honest, I think it's pretty sensible and I don't believe it's the sort of thing that would have made it into a guide books or the link without there being some truth behind it.

I know things can get lost or stolen anywhere, but most of the time when you go away you're travelling to an area that you don't know very well. As a result it's easier to unintentionally put yourself into more vulnerable positions or situations than perhaps you would at home. Anyone with the desire to steal from you can usually pick out a tourist from a mile away, making them easy targets.

Insurance to me wouldn't even be relevant. It's not about the ring, or the money, it's about the sentimental value it has which couldn't be replaced with a payout or another ring (to me anyway)

Then again, i'm a "better safe than sorry" kind of person and always quite happy to take off rings, leave phones behind and so on for peace of mind.

This, and I have read stories of hotel safes not always being the safest, wouldn't want to wear jewellery in the pool either, I wouldn't buy a fake but not taking it seems logical, ill definitely take my wedding ring though, the engagement ring is the one with the big diamond in though, so inevitably more desirable to thieves!

I left mine at home when we went on honeymoon. I didn't want anything that would make us more attractive to thieves, and my ER is much more flashy than my WR. I wouldn't want the hassle of trying to reclaim it on insurance as it's a bespoke piece. I'm used to taking mine off for work though, so maybe it wasn't as big a deal for me as for people who wear both all the time.

Wouldn't bother with a fake one though!

I wore my engagement ring to get married abroad, since naturally I wanted photos with both my rings on my wedding day. We were aware though, that it wasn't insured for travel outside Europe, and holiday insurance wouldn't cover it due to the ring's value. It didn't leave my finger except for the wedding day, where I wore it on my right hand until after the marriage ceremony.

OH worried more about me wearing the e-ring at work, saying one day some idiot I'm dealing with will cut my finger off for it. Fake rings wouldn't stop that sort if risk here or when travelling overseas. However, that risk is so minimal as not to matter. I only wear my wedding ring now at work anyway.

Before we got married we went on holiday to China and I left my ER at home. When my OH suggested I not take it with me I was outraged! BUT, I then mentioned this to a few people and they all agreed with him (damn!)

We went to Barcelona this weekend and wore both rings (but left ER in the safe when we went to a fooball match).

We're going to South Africa and Maritius for our honeymoon in Feb and I probably will leave my ER at home.

I'm sure loads of people will find this strange but i think better to be safe than sorry and even though the ring is insured, it's a one-off and in my eyes could never be replaced. I wouldn't however bother buying a fake ring.

I'd like to end with the fact that I'm the person who still takes off both rings when I get home from work so I'm quite protective of them!

I don't think your weird for taking your ring off. I don't wear mine at work because I'm a chef, and I always take it off when I'm having a shower, washing up, doing anything with water or mess etc... I don't wear it in bed either!

I left my ring at home when I went on a city break where pickpocketing was common. I just didnt wear any jewellery other than cheap earrings as I didn't want to draw attention to myself. I was wondering what to do on honeymoon as I don't like to wear it swimming either.

it is insured but i was happier with it at home.

I've since seen a cubic zirconia ring that is similar to mine - tempted to get it for such occasions!

My wedding ring is a lot cheaper than engagement ring and if I had to i could just go and get an identical one easily.

I think this is a brillaint idea !

i loose everything !! i think i might invest in a cheap set so if i do loose them it doesnt matter as others have said its no the money as much as the sentimental value.

I left both my engagement and wedding ring at home. I didn't wear a fake I just didn't wear anything. It felt strange at first but I would rather it not get stolen or lost. Even though they are covered on the insurance replacing them won't be the same as they aren't the originals. Maybe I was a bit paranoid but it was for only 2 weeks of my life so it didn't matter too much.

If I go anywhere else abroad that may have a risk of them being stolen I won't take them then either.

It would never have occurred to me to leave mine at home. Both rings have been on my finger 24 hours a day for 3 months. If it fits you properly then how could you lose it? Unless you take it off, but I don't understand why you would need to.
