range cookers?

fox-in-socks, 5 April, 2009 at 09:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I know a few hitchers have range cookers - what kind do you have? it's an absolute minefield as far as I can see. although i'd love an aga, i think they are just too impractical. we looked at falcons yesterday but i'm unsure..... what others did you consider / go for?

we're looking for 6 rings, grill, multiple ovens - 2/3?

thank you!

Ours was in the house when we bought it, it`s a diplomat and has 4 different sized rings with one big ring in the middle, one big oven and grill (that don`t work) and one small oven and grill. I should imagine it was a pretty cheap one, as everything the previous owners did was cheap. don`t know if this make is any good, but as i say the big oven doesnt work.

I spent hours and hours researching range cookers for our new kitchen so I'll help if I can. I did consider an Aga but we thought our kitchen would be too small for it to be constantly on and I couldn't bear to be too warm. I also was worried about the lack of precision cooking on one.

In the end I narrowed the search down to Falcon, Lacanche, and Britannia. After talking with a number of kitchen companies we went with Britannia who were recommended by John Lewis for their customer service and build quality in comparison with the other two brands. We chose the Britannia XG Dynasty which has a grill and 2 ovens. https://www.britannialiving.co.uk/product-range/range-cookers. It has 4 rings and a chef top but is available with 6 gas rings. It was the only range cooker which had A+ energy ratings for both ovens (as I recall the Falcon we looked at only had B and C). The Falcon also didn't have a clock or a timer on and while it wouldn't have been a dealbreaker it was a niggle. I liked the Lacanche but was concerned about the potential difficulties in getting a service engineer easily if needed.

I couldn't be happier with the Britannia and I'm glad we chose it. Honestly, I did spend hours doing research (and asked questions on here too) so if you have any opther Qs please ask.

The ex Mr R spent many a happy (?) hour searching for his perfect range. After much deliberation we got a Rangemaster, traditional style dual fuel with I think 2 ovens and it had 8 burners. He was adamant he didn't want the wok thing. I can't find it on their website as it was about 5 years ago now and styles seem to have changed somewhat.

After making the decision on what he wanted I had the wonderful task of finding the company to supply it. Another minefield. Pricerunner was incredibly helpful and I ended up getting it through a small independent company, purely on delivery time. I think it was maybe £50 more expensive but their customer service was brilliant and as we were on a tight schedule we just had to have it. IIRC the 8 burner thing had a lot to do with this too.

We've sold the house now, so the range has gone with it. I hated the damn thing. I just couldn't work it out! I don't enjoy cooking though so that has got a lot to do with it. The ex Mr R was the foodie, not me! Amusingly I ended up buying a house with a range which I have grown to love!

I'm another one who spent hours doing research into getting the right new stove. I ended up with a Bocuse range cooker - 2 full size ovens, 4 burners on one side, there is a wok burner too, and on the other side a really great cast iron griddle which is ridged on one side and smooth on the other so fab for making enormous pancakes.

I wanted 2 full sized ovens rather than 3 or 4 small ones, and also decided against the ones I saw which had only one very large oven as then you can't cook different things at different temps at the same time. (I had to rule out the Smeg, which was similar, but v expensive in comparison.)
