Rant alert - The canteen at work

Pompey, 16 September, 2011 at 13:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

The woman in the queue in front of me in the canteen at work was talking to her colleague about losing weight, she was on the larger side... So she orders a large (I kid you not, its probably about as big as my head) jacket potato with butter, cheese, beans, extra cheese on top and a massive dollop of mayo on top. Then, and this I almost laughed out loud at, ordered a skinny latte....

I'm not saying that I dont pig out from time to time, I do - what really got me was the ramblings about losing weight and eating healthily... sorry if this offends anyone, I just had to get it off of my chest.

Somebody probably told her that jacket potato's are healthy - I'm sure they are in reasonable proportions.

My ex-boss was like that, she'd come back from a doctors appointment complaining he'd said she could do with loosing weight and how her blood pressure was sky-high and her cholesterol result was shocking - only to then pop out on her lunch and come back with a McDonald's (and I don't mean the healthier stuff Maccy's do) and announce that her Hubby was out that evening so she could enjoy a whole bottle of wine to herself.

Well not that I can talk at all considering my weight, but seriously in all honesty I truly believe some people just aren't educated well enough about healthy eating, certainly in my year and half of dieting with slimming world my eyes haev been opened.

She prob did truly believe this was healthy, passing over the fish and chips or whatever was on in the canteen she might have previously ordered....

Now I'm better educated about it I couldn't dream of ordering that, especially as I'm of the paranoid persuasion and might worry people around me might start talking.

I'm one of these people who prefers diet coke to normal coke, so I sometimes order a Big Mac etc with a diet coke. Looks so hypocritical but I don't enjoy the taste of normal coke.

Most of the time, though, I'm too embarassed to do this so just order a Sprite!

Ditto! Everone assumes you drink diet coke because you are trying to be healthy or lose weight, i drink it because I prefer it!

Also, on the Maccy D's front, tying to order healthy there isnt alway the best choice. Those new chicken deli wraps, which you think are nice and healthy have more calories in them than a Mc Chicken sandwich, and only a few cals different to a Quarter Pounder with cheese! God knows whet they put in them to make them so calorific!

I used to do this in the pub on a Friday lunch - instead of a boring sandwich i'd have a huuuuge choccy fudge cake with hot sauce and ice-cream with a Diet coke (well, I didn't want too much sugar did I?)

I used to love being young - I could get away with that!

Re: OP - i'm sorry all I can do is laugh.

I went for a fry up for a treat with OH and ordered a small anglo breakfast. As we were leaving a woman was served a large breakfast with double everything and stated that she was going to weight watchers that evening and shouldn't be eating it ?

I found when I was in Australia that people tend to eat so much healthier and I think it is all down to what is on offer. Here a quick lunchtime meal is usually cheap calorie and carb laden or very bland overpriced salad. The food over there is geared towards healthy asian food or fabulous salads with every combination you can think of and it is well priced and generous portions which helps people make the right choices.

    i totally agree with this.

i found they have got food courts everywhere (i suppose similar to what you get in large shopping centres here), and i found they have got more healthier optioned places to get food than places like McDonalds in these food courts, and they food is fab!

Oh i cant wait till i go again, i miss the place Smiley sad

It always amazes me that nobody has yet cottoned on to the idea of healthy fast food as a niche business opportunity. Almost everyone I know who relies on cafes and food outlets for lunches at work complains about the lack of quick, easy, inexpensive healthy places to go for lunch. Everywhere is sandwiches, pasties, pies, burgers, chips. If someone opened a food outlet selling yummy salads and pastas, I bet it'd do really well.

I laughed too. It was just too funny.

When I went swimming last night there were two ladies who did about 2 lengths in the whole hour I was there... But couldn't wait to tell weight watchers about their exercise achievements. ?

The point about healthy fast food is a good one - also I often think why couldnt some restaurant have slimming world/equivalent sections in their menu, I love going out for dinner but if there was some SW lasagne or something like that available I'd find it easier.

Theres always baked tatties but Im not a fan of them so when I go with the intention of ordering one I always decide a toastie and chips can't be that bad! haha

I totally agree with you and have discussed this with OH so many times. I think the only problem is it may be a slow burner as a lot of English people are stuck in their ways with the food they eat and we could end up throwing money and unsold food down the drain on a daily basis, unlike pasties and pastries which can be stored frozen and have a longer shelf life. These places are a success abroad i.e Australia as they want to eat this type of food mainly due to healthier lifestyle and climate.

Most people eat with their eyes so if a take away like you mentioned had great window displays with the salads/pastas on display I am sure it would entice people in.
