Rant and readings help!

BrideHannahB, 1 April, 2009 at 15:57 Posted on Planning 0 16

I'm not getting married until next June but had picked out one of my readings already as loved the one from Captain Correllis Mandolin however....I've just found out that a friend due to be married in April of this year has picked it (well kind of, she chose another one but a mutual friend doing the reading has shown her my one (not realising) so they are going with that now). So now I'm chosing another as I don't want to have the same as someone else. This may sound mad as who remembers them - but I know I will remember it and I don't want to be reminded of someone elses wedding on my wedding day. All a bit frustrating though as she didn't actually choose it herself (that may have made it easier to cope with losing it) but would never had picked it had my friend not pointed it out as she orginally wanted another. We had a bit of an email bashing about it but in the end it was a case of her getting married first, plus now the reading will remind me of this whole situation!

So anyway I'm back to looking for readings so if anyone has any that they can recommend - not too lovey/slushy but on the same lines as the Captain Corelli one I would really appreciate it!

Sorry for the rant too - just feeling slightly frustrated about it esp when I thought I had that all sorted and loved it!!

Hope you don't mind me saying: But I really think that if you love it, then you should have it. I honestly cannot remember what anyone has ever had as a reading at a wedding. I know you say you'll remember it, but does it really matter? If it's a friend, then surely it will remind you of a happy day! Also as hers is April this year and yours is next June, you may well have forgotten all about it by then.

(I'm also having the same reading! I think it's lovely!)

About a million people use that reading and probably 95% of us on here have heard it before. Would we remember it from a specific wedding? no. If you love it keep it. It's over a year between your wedding and hers (if I'm reading that right) worse way it's 2months and a whole lifetime to mutual friends.

    Honestly, don't fret.

I don't remember any of the readings from the weddings I've been to. I can just about remember who read them!

If the ideas not too tarnished now, and FWIW I think that can be undone with a humble e-mail to your friend, I think you should go ahead and use it. Just remember you don't own it though!

I know I can still use it and maybe I'll keep it as a back up, but its still going to remind me of the fuss of the last few days and I don't want to have that memory so thats why I was hoping to get some other ideas.

    Will keep looking!

WSS. loads of people use the same church readings, same poems, same music etc etc. keep it and have it if you love it. not sure it's worth falling out with your friends over, especially if they didn't know you were using it.

i have NO idea which readings my friends used for their weddings - LOL @ spring too!

Ummm, out of the weddings I have been to, and the many that I've sung at (used to be in a choir), I have heard that particular reading in about 7 weddings. It seems to be a very popular reading, so I'm sure she would have stumbled across it by herself at some time.

If you love it, then have it.

I've also avoided a reading that someone else had at their wedding that I liked. However, if you really love it, have it. I think I only remember it myself as I knew it and liked it and from what others have said, guests don't generally remember the readings !

If you're still concerned, have a search via google - there are some lovely readings out there.

We haven't had a big falling out - we just agreed she would have it as she has less time to find another than I have. I know that no-one else would remember it but me but I guess (maybe naively) that I wanted to try and keep my wedding day as original as possible.

I'm fine to find another, was just hoping for a bit of inspiration....

We had this and a Scottish poem. I've got a load of others saved on a word document. I can email it to you if you PM me.

    Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE

    Union

    Robert Fulghum

You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment. At some point, you decided to marry. From that moment of yes, to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making commitments in an informal way. All of those conversations that were held in a car, or over a meal, or during long walks – all those conversations that began with, “When we’re married”, and continued with “I will” and “you will” and “we will” – all those late night talks that included “someday” and “somehow” and “maybe” – and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart. All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding.

The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, “You know all those things that we’ve promised, and hoped, and dreamed – well, I meant it all, every word.”

Look at one another and remember this moment in time. Before this moment you have been many things to one another – acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, even teacher, for you have learned much from one another these past few years. Now you shall say a few words that will take you across a threshold of life, and things between you will never quite be the same.

For after these vows you shall say to the world –
This is my husband. This is my wife.

Edited because of some random symbols appearing, and they won't go away- bizare!

It's the last 2 lines that get me. I still get goosebumps reading it, and I've been married nearly 2 years!

We're having Love's Philosophy by Shelley, An American Indian Blessing and Oscar Nash's "to keep your marriage brimming" The last one is a silly one which we're having read by H2B's neices.

Why not pop to the library and hit the poetry section - plenty of ideas there Smiley smile

You do have a while to find something else - who knows you may have done that anyway and not gone with Captain Corelli! As others have said it is a popular choice.

I found this huge thread of ideas on the US Indie Bride site - certainly some unusual ideas on there:

    http://kvetch.indiebride.com/index.php?t=msg&th=2271&prevloaded=1&rid=0&S=0736cbe972981061d8749e80a8bffb83&start=0

Took me a whole evening to wade through it mind!

Though I do also agree that it wouldn't be too odd to have the same reading at your wedding - people would have the same hymns and not think twice?

    Hi

I'm having the reading from Captain Corelli's Mandoline as well - I know it's really quite common and it is quite possible that one of the 5 weddings we're going to before our own this year will also have it. However, I'm going to go with it anyway as it's something I feel strongly about. We're also having this one:

    Blessing of the Hands

“These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever. These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other. These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow, and tears of joy. These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children. These are the hands that will help you to hold your family as one. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. And lastly, these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.”

Thanks to you all for your ideas - having a look through them and getting them ready to show h2b. Guess I just needed some reassurance that there were still plenty of lovely readings out there and I think you've definitely proved that!

    Thanks so much!
