re dressmakers..how much-is this too expensive?

donnaj36, 2 September, 2008 at 12:56 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi

I was recommended a dressmaker who has now altered CBMs dress (its a forever yours, full length with puddle train) as its from the US and was too big and too long. She has quoted me £60-I find this really expensive, the dresses themselves were only £100 each and I've got 6 to be altered!!!! have asked her for a discount due to the amount of dresses, but does anyone know if this price seems unreasonable?

TIA

My dress is a BM dress and I've been quoted £40 for taking it up (normal hemline, no train) and in a bit at the hips but I've been told that could change when she sees the dress at the end of the month, so given the train that price doesn't surprise me although I'm surprised she won't give you a discount for 6... Has the work already been done or can you try elsewhere? I found my seamstress via gumtree if thats any help!

Is it £60 in total or £60 per dress? To get my bridal gown altered the lady was charging £30 per hour.

I think it sounds fairly reasonable - it sounds like there is a fair bit of work to be done on them. My BM dress alterations are going to be £30-45 per dress (they are prom dress style, just below knee length), that's to adjust the hems and take them in slightly on the bust and waist where needed.

Hi donna, it does sound very expensive. we use 15 dressmakes in our area. none of them charge more than £30 a b/m. the more beadson a dress, the more expensive it is, as its more work, but your dresses have no beads, so should be even less. as an idea, for a plain b/m dress. to take in or let out side seams is £10, to take up a hem £10
