Reading of Banns

Alipops1986, 22 June, 2013 at 16:47 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hello All,

The church we are getting married in, has asked us to arrange for our Banns to be read in our local village church - how did people go about this? Just phone up the vicar? What did you say? We get married on 16th August.

Thanks in advance,

Alipops x

Do you go to your local church and therefore have met the vicar before? In which case I'd grab them after a service and ask them how he/she wants you to go about it.

Or just give him/her a call? Might be easier either way as they'd be in their office (or whatever they have!).

Alipops, I'm a bit confused as I was told that I couldn't marry in a church other than the one where I was resident. I'm now having a legal ceremony and then a blessing in the church where I initially wanted to get married. How did you get round it? Do you have family or a connection to the church your wedding is being held in? Sorry for all the questions ?

The church we're getting married at, previous family members got married in and I used to live near that for about 2 years before I moved - that's basically allowed us permission!

I have not really had much to do with our local village church so a bit eek, about how to go about having our banns read there. eek!

Maybe a good idea to pop to church tomorrow and introduce yourself. Will you go to church for the banns? I wish I had a connection to the church I want to get married in but I really don't!

I'm in the same position. I just emailed my current parish church, they sent me a form and i sent it back filled in and with a £34 cheque.

As your wedding is fairly soon, I'd call the vicar, or go in there so you can get it arranged, as you'll need to give a certificate to the church you're marrying in.

In the parish I live in, we went to church for a service and then spoke to the vicar there.. we went twice to hear our banns there, and then in the church we actually got wed in (different parish) I had rung the vicar and sorted it over the phone ( I was christened and confirmed with the church) again we went twice ( theres two vicars at the church and one of them gives me the heebie jeebies so we missed his service) ?

Call the church office. It's quite a usual 'thing'. They do the organising, you just need to give the legal info (names, address(es) marital status etc).

Just phone them up and ask them! They'll be used to it. You'll need to go in and fill in a form. You need to do it quickly as they need to do three times before your wedding date. We had to do this and because our local church kind of did services on a rota with another it was hard to fit them all in.
