Readings for church weddings

CountDuckula, 21 May, 2009 at 13:56 Posted on Planning 0 11

If you are getting married in a church, what bible reading are you having? I'm Googling like mad but struggling to find something. There was a reading from Corinthians which I really liked but my friend has just had it at her wedding and as we are already having one of the same hymns as she did, it would look a bit unimaginative.

Please help!

CD did you actually want a section of the Bible to be read out?

Yes, if I can find something suitable. All the suggested readings I've found so far seem to say things about wives submitting to their husbands in everything, which quite frankly, will be over my dead body ?
I'm kind of presuming that we need to have a bible reading - our booklet from the church states 'it is usual to have at least one reading from scripture in the service'. Perhaps I should actually check this out...

Hi not sure if this will be of any help at all but I spoke to our vicar last week and he said I can choose the non bible reading but that he would choose the bible reading as there are only a few suitables ones anyway? so he said not to worry about it as he will choose it and read it ? but I think he did mention corinthians ?!

also you may not agree but I very rarely remember any readings or hyms from a church ceremony (usually looking at the beautiful dress !!) so I dont think it matters if you use the same ones I dount anyone would notice ?

Thanks Spring, I have just been looking at that and have put it down as a possible.

Hely08, that's good to know. I really should talk to the vicar and find out. Our banns are being read at the beginning of June so I'll sort it out then. I'm just looking at my booklet and it has details of the service and the pastoral introduction which includes part of the Corinthians reading so it would probably be a bit daft for us to have it as a reading as well.

Hi CD - our vicar emailed me a list of possible readings. We chose Colossians 3.12-17. If you want I can email you the list with the passages, send me your contact details.

We are also having a secular reading - excerpt from captain corelli's mandolin which I love.

Glad that was some help !

I found it really helpful talking to our vicar he answered so many questions and told me the bits to worry about and the bits to leave to him - our banns are not till July but he said we can go over the details and readings etc then. he said they have an example order of service which will help as well.

    Hi ya

I have to say that probably 90% of weddings have Corinthians so it would be nice for your guests to hear something else, it is the most common (still lovely) reading.

I have a list of readings and this is the list I give to my brides. Then if you see something that you are interested in, search for the full reading on here

Thank you but I don't want to post my email address on here as I don't have one that doesn't contain my name! I will try and set up a trash mail account over the weekend though and come back to you then if that's OK?

Thank you to everyone else for all the other suggestions, they are really helpful x

This has been a really helpful thread for me, thank you.

I love the Song of Solomon readings, and the Ecclesiastes ones - that's narrowed it down considerably!

    xx
