Readings, Hyms, Songs etc What are you having?

Mrslh2b, 5 January, 2016 at 13:35 Posted on Planning 0 20

It's far too quiet on here lately so thought I'd start a thread we can all get involved with!

So as the title says, what readings are you having? If you're having a church ceremony what hymns are you having? Or are you having something a little different in your ceremony?

We're having H2B's Mum reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin the two trees quote:

Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your root was so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being in love, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.

Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two

And My Grandma reading sonnet 116:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no; it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Hymns are still to be agreed but H2B wants I vow to thee my country and I would like Bread of Heaven.

What’s everyone else having?

I'm also having the two trees reading.

I'm walking down the aisle in the Ice Chapel to a string quartet instrumental version of Elvis can't help falling in love with you.

After the wedding during photos having instrumental let it go from frozen (well how could I not!)

First dance in the snow to James Collins frozen in time.

    TOMORROW.

TOMORROW JAYNE!!! Ahhhh I'm so excited cos that means I'm on Saturday!!! Struggling to concentrate at work to the extreme!

I'm walking down the aisle to the guitar instrumental of Ed Sheeran's Tenerife Sea. Walking out to Hall and Oates You Make My Dreams Come True. My mum is reading this:

    LOVE ME (anon)

Love me when I’m old and shocking Peel off my elastic stockings Swing me from the chandeliers Let’s be randy bad old dears.

Push around my chromed Bath Chair Let me tease your white chest hair Scaring children, swapping dentures Let us have some great adventures

Take me to the Dogs and Bingo Teach me how to speak the lingo Bone my eels and bring me tea Show me how it’s meant to be

Take me to your special places Watching all the puzzled faces You in shorts and socks and sandals Me with warts and huge love-handles

As the need for love enthrals Wrestle with my damp proof smalls Make me laugh without constraint Buy me chocolate body paint

Hold me safe throughout the night When my hair has turned to white Believe me when I say it’s true I’ve waited all my life for you

And one of my bridesmaids is reading this:

He’s not perfect, by Bob Marley

“He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”

And our first dance song is one written and sung by myself so very few people will have heard it.

    TOMORROW JAYNE!!!!!! xxxxxx

I know. And I'm so calm except all these readings make me cry. God help me tomorrow! Glass igloos tonight. Breakfast when we get back, get ready then off to hand feed reindeer outside in my wedding dress at -30 degrees. The hotel staff think I'm completely insane! I'm coming down with a cold but who gives a poo.

    Hey Ladies!

    We're having:

Marriage is about giving and taking

    And forging and forsaking

Kissing and loving and pushing and shoving

Caring and Sharing and screaming and swearing

About being together whatever the weather

About being driven to the end of your tether

    About Sweetness and kindness

    And wisdom and blindness

It's about being strong when you're feeling quite weak

It's about saying nothing when you're dying to speak

It's about being wrong when you know you are right

It's about giving in, before there's a fight

It's about you two living as cheaply as one

(you can give us a call if you know how that's done!)

Never heeding advice that was always well meant

Never counting the cost until it's all spent

And for you two today it's about to begin

And for all that the two of you had to put in

Some days filled with joy, and some days with sadness

Too late you'll discover that marriage is madness.

Not the most romantic, but we're not a soppy couple- this is much more us!

I haven't decided on my final readings yet but my top 2 contenders are already up here!

Captain Corellis Mandolin, I am fairly sure my sister is reading this, I read it at her wedding and I love it!!

And then I really like Bob Marley, he's not perfect but not sure who to ask to read it!! This will be great to maybe get some more ideas!

We are having a humanist ceremony. My dad (who isn't giving me away, my Uncle is) is doing the following reading:

A good marriage must be created.
It is never being too old to hold hands,
It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day,
It is never going to sleep angry,
It is having a mutual sense of values and common
    objectives,
It is standing together and facing the world,
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole
    family,
It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating
    gratitude in thoughtful ways,
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget,
It is giving each other an atmosphere, in which each can
    grow,
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful,
It is not only marrying the right person, it is being the
    right partner

The humanist is doing this at the end:

To keep your marriage brimming, With love in the loving cup, Whenever you're wrong, admit it; Whenever you're right, shut up.

I am walking in to an instrumental version of The Cave by Mumford & Sons, and we are having You Got a Friend in Me and Best Friend by Queen playing during the signing. The piper will walk us out to Highland Cathedral. We are also having a hand fasting and a sharing of the quaich between our two families. Can't wait!

Sorry about the formatting... don't know how to change it!

Mr C is an organist and has lots of organist and choir friends so I've left him to come up with ideas, as long as I approve them!

Processional: undecided, but possibly something composed for the occasion.

    Recessional: Orb and Sceptre (Walton)

Hymns: O Perfect Love, Angel Voices, Father Hear the Prayer we Offer, There's a Wideness in God's Mercy, O Praise Ye the Lord

Psalm 150 (Stanford), Ubi Caritas (Durufle) and also an anthem during the signing of the register, which we haven't decided yet.

Well we haven't decided on a reading, but I'm not a fan, sorting it all out with the curate on Saturday, but preliminary we are hopefully having something nice by the curate. Hymns; Lord of the the Dance, and Give me Oil in my Lamp (not sure if they are the correct titles) but they were my favourite as a child and he has said I have carte blanche on pretty much everything to do with the religious aspect so Smiley laugh woo.

Other than that, I'm happy with "here comes the bride" and the other music, we can discuss with her on Saturday so we know the full timings etc.

Loads of luck for tomorrow Jayne, I can't wait to read your report. Have an absolutely fab day x

I'm having 'Maybe' and 'Extract from Plato's syposium'. There are others that I wanted but those were the only two I could get my OH to agree on! I love them, so I'm glad he does as well...

We are struggling with readings so will be following this thread with interest! I would like two ideally. My favourite at the moment is 'Union' but can't find a second that we like enough:

You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment. At some point, you decided to marry. From that moment of yes, to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making commitments in an informal way. All of those conversations that were held in a car, or over a meal, or during long walks – all those conversations that began with, “When we’re married”, and continued with “I will” and “you will” and “we will” – all those late night talks that included “someday” and “somehow” and “maybe” – and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart. All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding.
The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, “You know all those things that we’ve promised, and hoped, and dreamed – well, I meant it all, every word.”
Look at one another and remember this moment in time. Before this moment you have been many things to one another – acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, even teacher, for you have learned much from one another these past few years. Shortly you shall say a few words that will take you across a threshold of life, and things between you will never quite be the same.
For after today you shall say to the world –
This is my husband. This is my wife.

As for songs, it keeps chopping and changing slightly but at the moment its as follows:

    Entrance: Ella Henderson - Yours

Signing Register: Wrabel - Ten Feet Tall & Lifehouse - You & Me

Exit (god, that's not the right word, but YKWIM): Coldplay - Sky Full of Stars

But with the songs, entrance: Ed Sheeran, Tenerife Sea
Signing: Josh Record, For Your Love & Stevie Wonder, Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Leaving: Smash Mouth, I'm A Believer

Chale, my mum is an organist/choirmaster so she picked most of our music - I processed in to Walton, we had the Stanford Beati Quorum Via as an introit, and then a John Rutter at the signing of the register - except there was a miscommunication between the vicar and the organist and the choir sang the wrong one! It was supposed to be The Lord Bless You and Keep You, and instead they sang A Gaelic Blessing. Slightly annoying but I didn't really care at the time, I was too happy! The Stanford was absolutely beautiful, really calmed my nerves before I walked down the aisle.

What an absolutely brilliant thread! Has given me a couple of ideas which is great as I was really struggling with readings. Don't want anything religious or too soppy!

The only thing I've decided on is that I'm walking in to Canon in D - a piano/violin duet version I found. It's quite traditional, I know, but it's the only thing I've heard where I feel any emotion and can really picture myself walking down the aisle to it! The dilemma I currently have is whether I have it for the whole procession (me and mum/BMs/flower girls/page boys) as it starts off quite slow, or have something separate for the bridal party. Difficult as there won't be a real rehearsal and would involve trying to describe to DJ what to play when!
