Readings in a civil ceremony

KatieJones, 15 February, 2011 at 16:17 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi all

What readings or poems are you having during the ceremony? I am finding this a very hard task!

I am having a registry office wedding. We are having a poem written by a friend and this:

‘On your Wedding Day’ – Anonymous

Today is a day you will always remember

    The greatest in anyone’s life

You’ll start off the day just two people in love

And end it as husband and wife

It’s a brand new beginning, the start of a journey

With moments to cherish and treasure

And although there’ll be times you both disagree

These will surely be outweighed by pleasure

You’ll have heard many words of advice in the past

When the secrets of marriage were spoken

But you know that the answers lie hidden inside

Where the bond of true love lies unbroken

So live happy forever as lovers and friends

It’s the dawn of a new life for you

As you stand there together with love in your eyes

From the moment you whisper ‘I do’

And with luck, all your hopes, and your dreams can be real

May success find it’s way to your hearts

Tomorrow can bring you the greatest of joys

But today is the day it all starts

There was a thread about this a month ago or so, perhaps you can get more ideas there...

We're not having a civil ceremony, but we are planning to have http://twincitieswedding.blogspot.com/2007/03/reading-union-by-robert-fulghum.html by Robert Fulghum and https://www.itakeyou.co.uk/wedding-ideas/wedding-readings-poems/a-lovely-story.htm by Edward Monkton in addition to our bible reading.

We're having a religious ceremony so apart from the religious readings we're having one reading by two of my friends that have written something about us themselves. They're making it funny/nice and I don't get to hear it until the day! My sister is also giving the following reading -

Maybe…We are supposed to meet the wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift.

Maybe...it is true that we don't know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we don't know what we have been missing until it arrives.

Maybe...the happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their Way.

Maybe...the best kind of love is the kind you where you can sit on a sofa together, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had.

Maybe...you shouldn't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.

Maybe...you should hope for enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy.

Maybe love is not about finding the perfect person; it's about learning to see an imperfect person perfectly. When you do what you can, love will do what you can't

I'm finding it hard too. Trying to find something suitable for my 11yr old daughter to read, she loves reading and is very keen to do this. Struggling to find something that's not too old for her to read or too young. x

My OH (with help from his mum) has written a poem about our relationship which is amazing. Our other poem is being read by my dad and I asked him to find something that he would like to read, mainly as I wanted him to be able to chose but also meant I didn't have to make a decision!! he he

My 16 year old neice will be doing a reading for us and purely by chance i have come into possession of a wonderful poem written by a lovely gentleman for his wife. He actually wrote it whilst in hospital before a major operation (and he wasnt sure if he would make it out the other side). He wrote it on bits of toilet paper and the rubbish bag they attatched to your table in hospital and gave it to his wife before he went in. Luckily he survived and he has since published the poem and it has been sold to raise money for Charity. I was visiting him for work and i had told him and his wife a bit about our wedding plans. He thought i might like a copy of his poem.... I read a few lines of it, became very tearful and asked him if he would mind if I used it as the reading for our wedding. He was very touched by this and even said that me and my OH have to go round for dinner once we are husband and wife (Its a very sweet offer but professionally it crosses the boundaries so I will have to find a way to respectfully decline).

Its amazing where you can find these things so just keep your eyes and ears open!
