Real -V- Fake

Vikster79, 12 August, 2010 at 10:49 Posted on Planning 0 49

Is it just me or does anyone else really not like fake flowers? I dont know if it is a "parent" thing, but my Nan used to have a zillion fake flower arrangements at home and my mom always commented how she didnt like them (not to her face!!) Now i think this has rubbed off on me as i cant stand fake flowers. Funny isnt it what you pick up from family members ?

I'm not too fussed about real or fake flowers, not a fan of flowers to be honest but have bowed to family pressure and will have a bouquet but it will most definately be fake, cannot believe the price of real wedding flowers.

Have you looked & touched real flowers lately? Not all fake flowers are the cheap pound shop variety!

I use lots of different artificial flowers using different materials, the Real Touch really do feel like real flowers. Have a look through my albums & tell me which are real & which are fake. I have had people trying to smell the flowers at weddings they are so realistic!

My boquet will be real, but my table centres are all fake. We are doing them ourselves, and they are all made already, so no stressing at the last minute! ten years ago I might have not been so keen, but there are some really lovely silk flowers out there nowadays.

And theres another good point - the smell of fresh flowers. i cant remember the last time I smelled fresh flowers, oh it was the lavender my neighbour gave me, but my wedding bouquet?? a non descript mass produced holland greenhouse smell i think is the best way to describe it, lolol.......

next time you're in tescos, have a whiff, then compare it to a flower in the garden Smiley smile

I think you can tell fake flowers (even the expensive real touch ones) quite easily in photographs. I suspect it's because they're so 'perfect' and uniform.

I'm having real ones, mainly for the smell, so that would rule out fake ones!

I kind of agree Teehee - I'm wonder whether to have flowers at all even though I love them but they never smell anymore. Sherie - what flowers give a lovely scent. I can only think of lillys. (sorry for hijacking the thread vicster)

And sorry for spelling your name wrong!! ?

What are you having as a centre piece then? I am thinking not flowers too but bit worried it will look strange without them. I think I will have to do a mock up closer to the time - its a long way away yet!

We got a rectangular vase with peacock feathers and 3 cala lilies in.....probably putting some glittery glass beady type things in the bottom to hold them in place. Not really into flowers at all but i liked the look of them together. Have you thought about vases filled with stones and then water and a floating candle

HAHA!! Vikster! They're almost identical to what we're having, except in shallow dishes, and we're having shells instead of stone....sea theme since we met scuba diving.

But on the note of your thread, I looked at real flowers but they're so expensive and I've found some really lovely foam ones that look really real. I wanted something really simple but classy and I'm really pleased with them so far.

Some are dreadful but you can get incredible foam roses and flowers these days that look so real.

You can also now get freeze dried flower bouquets - they are real but dried, look incredible and last forever. Wish I'd known about this beforehand as I now have to pay a fortune to get mine preserved!

I don't think you can tell fake flowers in pictures if they are good quality and not pundland cheapo's, I really can't tell real from fake on Sherrie's website and as for smell I'm not a fan of the smell of flowers.

My OH bought me some roses for our first anniversary (before he knew how ungrateful I am lol) and I thought they smelled like cat's pee! But each to their own, it wouldn't do to have the same opinion as everyone else!

I agree with this about fresh flowers, i dont really 'do' flowers and wont have any as wedding decorations, but my daughter is having a bouquet which we are simply picking from my mums garden on the day and tying a ribbon around it!

That sounds lovely (another B2B that doesn't do flowers)

I saw some nice pearl headed pins in hobbycraft that are used for securing the ribbon to the stems, they had diamonte ones too and lots of different colours aswell, that might be nice to add a bit of bling to your daughter's bouquet.

My daughter is 8 and really looking forward to our big day, she is having a wand I think, she's not decided, she likes pomanders too! She's a girly girl, not like me at all x

Fake all the way. As many others have said, you can get some fab fake flowers, which really do look real. I'll be making my own bouquet to cut down costs.

Real flowers are lovely, but I can't justify the cost. Plus, I want to put my bouquet on my Dads grave afterwards, and real flowers won't last all that long there.

My CB will be having a clutch bag, and my (step)daughter will either have a wand, or a small bouquet, also made by myself.

It really is a case of each to their own.

Fake flowers nowadays are of a really high quality. I am getting mine from Rainbow Flowers here on Hitched, looking at the pictures you really wouldn't be able to tell that they were fake. Plus it's nice knowing that you will get to keep them forever

See i dont get the whole cost thing about fake flowers either - we have had our quote for real and the quote for fake and teh materials that we would need to make and put the bouquets together and the difference was about £20.

You should shop around although you seem to have decided against fake anyway , the prices I was quoted from a fair few suppliers the general consensus has been that the fake have been half the price of real sometimes more like 70% cheaper.

I like real live plants and flowers (outdoors and indoors). Cut flowers can be beautiful, but it makes me sad that they'll be dead and gone after a few days.

I don't like fake flowers in general (as household ornaments/decoration) unless they have meaning, but I'm like that with most ornamental stuff, it needs to have some sentimental attachment not just be there for the sake of looking at.

I'm having foam roses and my own handmade french beaded flowers for my wedding flowers.

So full of sentimental memories, and hand made art too!

I had silk (I think the word 'fake' makes you think of cheap plastic-y flowers your gran used to have!) and the receptionist at the hotel, as they sat on her reception desk, went to smell them when they arrived. Obv she found out fairly quickly they were silk, but they were that realistic that she couldn't tell, like, less than a foot from her face (other than the lack of smell!)...

I think the cost thing is because a real bouquet will be dead/dying within a day or so, so that money is 'gone' very quickly. With silk, you get to keep them, pass them to family/friend as a thank you, leave on a grave (which a lot of people do) or just keep them ... for as long as you want. That is where I think folk believe they are getting value for money, but there is also the fact you can get out of season flowers anytime, and if you decide to throw your bouquet it isn't going to fall apart or get totally ruined in the scramble. I can't stand seeing a bouquet left on a table somewhere all droopy and fading before the end of the reception. Breaks my heart!

And I am sure for some flowers, silk is a lot cheaper ... maybe not all but I'm sure for some. Think of a stem in a florist - some might be 90p, others will be £3.50.... you'd not get that much of a price difference in silks.

Its not for all, but folk reading this thread thinking about silks should not be put off - get a good florist and they will blow your socks off with what they will supply you!

I appear to have gotten a few backs up with this thread which was not my intention. We all have differing views and opinions on what makes a wedding special to them. My original question was aimed at people who didnt actually like fake flowers and not particularly for a host of people praising them, but then it is a forum and freedom of speech and all that.

You hadn't actually got my back up until your last comment if I'm honest about not wanting a host of people praising them, I think many of us who "praised" them were just trying to give a balanced view, but each to their own, tis only flowers afterall!

Yes, I tend to agree with Woo Woo!

Freedom of speech 'and all that' does tend to mean that a thread can take off in a different direction quite quickly.

I don't think any of the 'host' of responses has been rude or offence, so no signs of anyones backs being 'up' ... maybe until you posted your last post which is kinda saying 'you silk flower fans, butt out, this thread wasn't for you'.....

    But hey ho!

The thing is with forums if you dont like the question or cant answer it then you dont tend to comment. As my original question stated quite obviously that i wasnt going to use fake flowers, and yes they are fake no matter what material they are made from as they arnt real, then a barrage of people telling me that i should shop around and look at the brilliant quality of them was really irrelevant.

    Hardly a barrage....

And the other thing with forums is people WILL and DO comment whether they like the question or not, I will continue to add my two pennies worth whether it's been asked for or not.
