really need dress advice! please

snap, 30 April, 2010 at 14:35 Posted on Planning 0 34

Hi guys, Im new here so this is my first post.

I think i have found 'the dress' but the shop its from dont let you take pictures, take out all the lables from the dresses and dont tell you what make they are. is this normal?? ive been to quite a few shops and this is the only one i have found like this. Is it dodgy to not know where your dress is coming from? its also quite an expensive one so because i cant look it up im not sure if im getting ripped off. what do you guys think, have you come across a shop like this ??

    Hey, welcome to hitched.

I've been in shops where you can't take pictures but never where they hide the labels, sound suspicious to me. ?

Same as Grace - no piccies but always told where the dress was made and even told to go look it up online if I wanted to.

well i did kindof ask when i noticed there were no lables, i asked what make it was and he said 'its one of ours' so i said ' oh you have them specially made?' and he said 'no but you'll find most bridal shops order there dresses from the same kindof places but just put them under different names' Smiley atonished didnt really know quite what to make of that, the shop has been in my city all my life though, and the guy was very helpful, but its bugging me that i cant look it up, or even really remember exactly what it looked like!

    'One of ours' WTF!!!! ?

Sounds well dodgy to me..................... stay clear and visit some more shops in your area, you are bound to find the same sort of design in another 'make'.

    Bl00dy cheek!!!!!

What style of dress are you looking at? Perhaps we can help you on here?

For a start, try looking at the Maggie Soterro website which is where I got my dress, this is a well known make.

The dress shops I went to wouldn't allow photos, except when I had made my decision and was about to pay the deposit etc.

I've found that the shops will call the dresses different things. For example I tried on a dress by Essence that Essence called d750 but the shop called it 'destiny'. The label was still in the dress though.

Cutting the labels out sounds slightly bizarre. I've heard of it in wholesale places but never a bridal shop. How much was it out of curiosity?

Can you ring them up and enquire or make another appointment to try on again and try and find out. Say you're not happy spending X amount of money without fully knowing what you're buying?

Does the shop have a website - if so, does it list what suppliers they sell?

Hmmm well thanks for your advice guys.

Its difficult cos ive been to quite a few shops now and its my fave dress by far, seen nothing else quite like it. At the end of the day if you think it looks good quality does it really matter?? im not sure :s

No the shop dosnt have a website Smiley sad the dress is 1,200 but they offer 10% off if u pay in full

Yes i have 2 shops local to me that do this! They r worried about being beaten in price!!!! ONe of them is a really well established shop too which attracts alot of buisness!

I have to say it did put me off tho! I prefer ones where i can see properly what im getting for my money!

I did see this with my friend a year and a half ago. Now after hours of searching i did find he dress by looking the shops website and trailing through all the dress companies til i found it! Not an easy task. Was she pushy for you to make another appt to try it on?? Some of them will print you off a quote if you're interested so you might get something on there!

Welcome to Hitched BTW snap! ? When's your big day!?? Where you from!??

Alot of bridal shops will 'rename' the dresses or use their own code so you cant call other shops and get other prices - I think its quite common!

I would be annoyed about the photo tho as u might want to remind yourself or show other people - thats taking it too far!!

Hi there! I think this sounds uber suspicious! In my experience it is pretty normal that you can't take pictures...lots of shops are funny about this . Not only has this happened with me but last year we were shopping for my sisters dress and had the same expereince. I do think its very odd that they won't tell you the brand! When you are spending a lot of money surely thats a selling point for them?? I do think this sounds very very odd

When i went to try my dresses on i took my bridesmaid. It just happens shes an artist so when I was in the cubicle with the asst getting my dress on she was drawing it on a piece of paper, along with my comments and any other info she could get from the label once the asst returned it to the rail... sneaky but it helped lots. I had something to go back to and I now have something rather hilarious to frame...

    Congratulations and welcome!

sounds pretty dodgy. can you ring them and say you really like it and if they could tell you more about where it is made, who the designer is etc, then you would be happy to go ahead. often if you frame it like that - a condition of purchasing it - then it might convince them? and if you dont like the info, or you change your mind, you havent committed any money so you can get out of it

did you try googling dresses calling 'destiny' to see if you find a picture of it? xxx

I guess I just need to decide if the label bothers me :s been scanning the net all afternoon looking for it but no luck

They say no to photographs so that you dont take your picture to a dressmaker and say 'i want that one!'

No luck with the name atall, but 'destiny' dreses seem to be what they call dresses to wear on abroad weddings so that wasnt helping. I know i should pluck up the courage to ask them more info, Im just not a terribly confident person and dont like annoying people Smiley sad

You will not be annoying them! always remember that suppliers want and need your business, so it is in their best interests to be polite to you and answer all your questions. you will be giving them money for their product (a LOT of money!) and so you need to know exactly what you are paying for

i say do it nowww! good luck xxx

Don't worry about how it looks in the picture - it's about what it's like in real life. Pictures never match the real thing, so don't let that get you down - I'm sure you look fantastic in it and that's what counts!

I tried on my dress in a shop, i was lucky and got the name, i then called around all the stockists and found it 490 quid cheaper, it pays to call around after you find 'the dress' if you have the name and make of it

This happened when I went bridesmaid dress shopping - I'd been with 2 of them to 2 different shops and everything was 'normal' - went to a shop in Cardiff with another bridesmaid and all the labels were cut out. On top of that the woman in the shop didn't help at all! Luckily (and worryingly for my sanity) I actually recognised the dresses and remembered the design numbers so was able to make a note of the dresses my BM liked. I don't know, the dresses just looked horrible with the labels cut out, like they'd been stolen or something! Really glad you found the dress online though!

Glad you found it online Snap!

Dont take any notice of the pics online of dresses. You def need to try them on because they look totally different. Wedding dress models seem to stand really weirdly and have dodgy expressions which can put you off, the model wearing my dress is well dodgy!! ?
