Reception meal advice needed

lidbif, 7 October, 2012 at 14:46 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi

I need some advice! We are getting married at 2pm at the same venue as we have our reception, so no travelling time between venues.

After the ceremony we were thinking of having some time for photos with and without family and friends and having a drinks reception with canapés during this time.

Later we would have a sit down but have been toying with the idea of having afternoon tea rather than a formal sit down meal. The reasons I would like to do this as afternoon tea is one of my favourite things and we have been to a lot of weddings with a two or three course meal with food that a lot of people aren't keen on. The place we are getting married has offered us this option but told us they didn't think it would be ok as people expect a meal. The tea would consist of bridge rolls, sandwiches, homemade pies, cream cakes and scones with jam and cream.

We then thought we would have fish and chip cones and bacon sarnies in the evening.

So my questions are:

What do you think of the tea idea, do you think it's ok?

What would you then do about alcohol during the meal?!

Any opinions are most welcome!

I think afternoon tea is a great idea. My boss's daughter did that for her wedding and it went down a storm! With regards to alcohol, serve up the wine on the table as usual and let people help themselves. If they would like a glass of wine with their cuppa, it's up to them! A glass of sparkly always goes down well with afternoon tea (I love a good champagne A Tea) so if you can afford it, perhaps serve up prosecco to go with it instead of wine?

I love cream tea too think it sounds like a great idea and is very filling so I don't think people would miss not having a full meal.....You can always include this info in your invites e.g.

    xxx are invited to the

Wedding Ceremony of xxx & xxx at 2:00pm

Followed by afternoon tea & evening reception

As for booze champagne or cocktails (pimms, long island ice tea etc) would work well.

I personally would not put bacon sarnies in the evening though otherwise it will be sandwich overload.

I LOVE this idea, Im hoping my place will let us do something like this too. I cant remember a single meal I have had at a wedding, so that says it all. I also agree with maybe jugs of Pimms etc. It will look great!

Sounds great - I love afternoon tea! Plus if I was going to a wedding at 2pm I would make sure I had a big brunch, so I think your food ideas sound fine.

Sounds great! Anyway it's your day you have it how you want! We had pie and peas for our meal and it went down really well.

Give me any excuse to eat scones with clotted cream and jam and you've got yourself a happy Emily. Seriously, even shopping in M&S and walking past the entrance to the cafe is sometimes excuse enough. LOVE afternoon tea!

Agree with the others, that afternoon tea is fine, you just need to advise guests beforehand so they can have a big brunch. I'd make sure there is plenty of food also- maybe some quiche, onion/goats cheese tarts, fritatta etc so people arent hungry with just sandwiches & scones.

I too was going suggest jugs of pimms, long island iced tea or normal iced tea if its hot weather. It should work out cheaper too which is a bonus!

By the way, what are bridge rolls???

It's your wedding, you do what you want hun. Personally afternoon tea is something I love and would be over the moon if I had it at a wedding. I agree with other posts have jugs of pimms and champagne with it... it'll be lovely :-)

I would LOVE to be a guest at this type of wedding, cream tea and chips are my favourite things in the entire world. If you would like this for your day, have it. Don't worry about what others want, they can have what they want at their wedding!

    I love this idea!

You could have proscecco with the afternoon tea, or create your own fruit punch/cocktail? Whatever you do, as long as there is enough food to fill people up as they may be expective a 3 course meal then I think you're on to a winner!

I think its a lovely idea, however I would suggest mentioning it in your invites just in case people dont like it. I say this as I know generally you dont get to pick what you eat at a wedding but normally with a 3 course meal even if you dont like parts of it there will be something you can eat within those 3 courses. I dont like butter or cakes but this is not really a 'dietery requirement' just my fussy taste and I once went to a party with afternoon tea and as all the sandwiches had butter there was nothing I was able to eat. ☹️ my own fault I know for being a fuss pot but if I had known beforehand that it was afternoon tea I could have asked if they were able to do a couple of sandwiches with no butter or just made sure I had eaten beforehand.

Also, this afternoon tea had cocktails such as Pimms and long island ice tea but they were served in teapots which I thought was a nice touch! x
