Reception - what to do??

alex86, 10 May, 2009 at 12:07 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi ladies, I'm after some advice please.

We have booked the church now and we have looked at one reception venue which H2B wants to book.

It's not a bad venue, but it's not great either. It's a little village hall, so it's quite plain and boring inside, which is fine I guess as we can decorate it as we want it, but the building looks very shabby and old - the toilets are awful! I am also not a big fan of the chairs, they're a sort of dirty-barley-gold colour ?, and the man there informed me that they are brand new, so I doubt very much that they'd be changed by the time our wedding roles around (chair covers are not an option). Maybe I'm just being too fussy??

On the plus side, it's in quite a nice location and it's got lots of (not particularly attractive) space around it for activities to keep the kids (and grown ups) amused, and it's cheap: £350 to book it for the whole day, but that's only if we book it this year - it'll probably go up next year.

Have a look at the pictures on their website and tell me if I am just being too fussy?

It's still 2 years until we get married, and I can't help thinking we're being a little premature in booking it. H2B is not at all good at making decisions and choices, so he'd rather just book the one venue we've seen and remove any need to make a choice. I can't help thinking we'll change our minds and then end up booking somewhere else too and losing our deposit.

So I'm a bit stuck really - do we book it now at the cheaper price and have done with it, or do we wait a while to see if we can find anything better?

Sorry for babbling!

Alex ❤️

It doesnt look that bad on the website - how awful are the toilets exactly?? For health n hygiene reasons they wouldnt be allowed shabby loos.... or how could they be made to look better?

For piece of mind I would go and look at 2 other venues within your budget, even if its on your own for the now.... then when you have given it some thought, bring him into it...... saves him having to worry about too many choices and will only have to make 1 when the time comes.

I agree with Tee Hee. You're obviously not sold so go and have a look round some other places. We thought we wanted the first place we saw, until we saw the venue we've now gone with which was obviously more 'us'...

It doesn't look that bad but I agree with Nona, go and look at a couple of other venues, you weddding is 2 years away so you will have loads of choice and plenty of time to save if you see something a bit more pricey.

My h2b isn't very good at making decisions either, he will take the easy option for an easy life , we would probably end up getting married in the local bowling club or something ?, which is why I am planning our wedding and not him ?

they look like they just walked straight in out of the 70s - i'm all for retro, but not in the bathroom! lol!

thanks for all ur help tho ladies, think i'm gonna have a drive around and look at some other local village halls. A lot of them don't have websites and I've discounted them for that reason - a bit silly really!

Don't suppose anyone knows of any other pretty and cheap reception venues in and around the Solihull/Warwick/Redditch area?? ?

I would definitely go and see a couple of other venues. We trawled the internet looking for suitable places and did find a couple of good ones, but we also had a few suggested to us by members of our family that either didn't have websites, or did but you couldn't really tell anything from the website so we had to just go have a look. I saw a lot that really weren't what I had in mind, so when I finally found 1 that would work I was all ready to get it booked. So glad I took my dad's advice and went to a couple more as we found another place I'd never heard of, went to see it and knew it was the one! You may well decide this place is the right place, but you'll have much more peace of mind if you check others first, and if the wedding is in 2 years you should still have plenty of time to do that.

    Hiya!

I would definitely agree with the others and say that you should look at a few venues before you make up your mind, especially if you're not completely sold on the first one.

I would also suggest that you look at Sherrie H's pics opf venue dressing (if you google Aisle Be Yours and follow the link) as her pics are a testament to how much a simple hall can be transformed into something amazing with the right decortaion.

    Best of luck! ?

I shouldn't leave it closer to the time................your venue needs sorting now. It might be a regional thing, but in NI most venues are booked 2 years in advance, hence I'm getting a lot of mid week and Sunday bookings because people can't get a Saturday for two years.

Have you tried looking at Golf Clubs? Mine cost us £500 to hire for the day, much cheaper than other venues but still with the same great gardens and views of more expensive manor houses etc. We used a Crown Golf club.

    Hello

I'm getting married not far from there (near Henley). There are loads of places in that area. I'd definitely go and see a few more places. Try the warwickshire list of registered venues as a start (obv you don't need the registered bit but should give you a start for places).

Presumably you would be paying for food on top of that, so don't forget to factor that in because a lot of places don't separate that out.

Also, you say chair covers are out but my fiance's brothers fiance (ie future sister in law) is making some for her wedding because that is cheaper - could be worth a try if you're good at sewing because you have enough time.

That's a good idea, I'll have a look at some golf clubs.

The thing that I'm finding really restrictive at the moment is that we don't want a propper sit down meal, just a hog roast with a bit of a buffet. I really don't want to pay hotel prices for food because I think they're ridiculously priced and not really the sort of food we like (especially H2B). So really, I'm looking for somewhere with nice grounds and a pretty building with nice chairs and toilets where we can do our own catering for under £500! Not asking much, am I?!

I like the idea of a marquee but the only quote I've got is £2663 which is over half our budget! Is this a normal price to pay for a marquee?

I'm not far from Dorridge but I've never played at that venue. The website is strangely retro as well!

There are loads of good marquee hire companies out there so bargain them down if you want to go down that route!
