Reception/Year1 Teachers - clarification needed please

sandieb, 14 July, 2008 at 18:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

Hello

My four year old has come home with his first school report. He is five later this month and starts Year 1 in September after two terms in Reception.

The report mentioned achieving Stepping Stones and Early Learning Goals in varous criteria. I presume ELG are a higher level that SS but there is no indication of targets for entrance (for want of a better word). I think what I mean is he as achieved SS on all 13of the criteria and ELG on many of them, is this average for this age/entrance into Year 1.

Thanks

Hi, I'm sure someone more qualified than me will comment soon (I'm a KS2 teacher) but it sound to me like they are listing the objectives from each that he has achieved.

Thanks for your reply Pina Colada.

Yes, I think that's right, but I was wondering whether the ideal aim for children entering Year 1 in September is for them to have achieved all 13 criteria at SS or ELG level if that makes sense.

    Hi,

The Early learning goals are what Reception children work towards during their time in that class. The Stepping Stones are the levelled steps that they work from in Nursery leading into Reception. The SS start with yellow level, then blue, then green then moving into grey which are the ELG.

The ELG in the Foundation Stage Profile are also levelled - the first three are green (I think) then the grey then pink (for advanced leading into National Curriculum Level 1) - 9 in total. Generally it is presumed that an average Reception child will achieve a 6 in each of the 6 areas and their subsections - 3 for PSED; 4 for CLL, 3 for PSRN, 1 for KUW, 1 for PD and 1 for CD, but these vary according to each area.

If your son has achieved the SS and ELG on many of them then this sounds like it is average for the age. Some of the ELG are so vague though and it depends on the individual teacher as to whether or not they achieve it, e.g. has an understanding of their beliefs and those of other people, could be interpreted differently dependent upon what sort of school, ie. a Catholic school may consider that they have a heavier weighting to achieve this.
