Recommend a debt plan book please

policefox lyn, 6 March, 2009 at 13:49 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

As the title says.

H and I are both a bit guilty of sticking our heads in the sand over our current finances- him more than me. We have manageable debts but I'm concerned that we may be spending more than we earn and I want to get back on track- especially as I'm currently debating whether to have another baby and our finances are the crunch point.

I can get a bit obsessive about things sometimes so I'm hoping to channel this energy into our finances.

I would like a book to help me look objectively at our finances and formulate a plan to get debt free/live within our means and establish if baby no 2 is a viable option. I know MSE is worth looking at but I want a book I can read and then dip in and out of as I don't always get the chances to go online that I would have to read a book.

Any recommendations? (also any other tips/strategies/good websites greatfully received)

Thanks

The Money Diet by Martin from MSE is excellent for getting on track with your finances and budgetting properly. I'd recommend using that in conjunction with the website for up-to-date information on particular aspects of your finances, e.g. utility savings/ best buy bank accounts etc. There is also a downloadable budget spreadsheet ont he site that ties in with the book

Another good site is www.fool.co.uk - look for their Dealing with Debt board.

I've not read them myself, but:

    'the millionaire next door' http://www.amazon.co.uk/Millionaire-Next-Door-Thomas-Stanley/dp/0671015206/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236372570&sr=1-1

    and

'a girls best friend is her money' http://www.amazon.co.uk/Girls-Best-Friend-Her-Money/dp/0752261711/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236372536&sr=1-3

..have been highly recommended. Does your local library have them? (May as well start as you mean to go on, by not spending money!!)

Good on you for addressing the issues now before things get out of control.

Lowe's 'Be Your Own Financial Advisor' has been fab for us. It goes through it all step-by-step, helping you to prioritise your spending (and savings) and has boxes for you to fill in with your own financial data and calculations to help work things out an' ev'ryfink.

    Thanks all.

I actually bought the first one recommended (before other people had posted) but I did do the good thing of buying it for £0.01 used on amazon so inc postage it was £2.76 rather than £5.99 for new!!

Our library is not very big so doesn't have much and whilst I think they can get things from the main library in Hereford I haven't found that to be all that great either. Also I think this book has sections to write in so I can do that in my own copy and I'm hoping to dip in and out of it a lot.

Will maybe try and get some of the others from the library though.

    thanks again.

Absolutely seconded. We were in a similar position - doing ok but savings going down and we weren't sure why. We did the money diet budget planner and realised we were spending more than we earned - not by much, but enough to mean that we were never going to pay off our debts and sort out our savings. 4 years later we're in a really healthy position.

I also really like Alvin Hall's Your Money or Your Life book.
