Recommend a West End show!

Spamboule, 10 June, 2009 at 18:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

We were given money as a wedding present with specific instructions to spend it on going to see a show.

We live in London, so of course never go to the theatre (after all, it's on our doorstep, we can go any time ?). What's on that you have enjoyed recently? I have suggested Priscilla QOTD and La Cage Aux Folles but my H isn't so sure on seeing those. We went to Avenue Q a couple of years ago and loved it, so that rules it out.

Pre-requisite from my H - nothing cheesey (so I guess no Dirty Dancing/Grease etc)

Any suggestions?

TIA ?

I've seen We Will Rock You with my H and we both loved it.

Other ones I've seen and loved but possibly not for your H are Grease, Dirty Dancing, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked and my favourite Hairspray (H didn't want to see it but spent the night laughing out loud in the theatre - Michael Ball is fantastic as Edna Turnblad!)

I would recommend the Lion King - visually it is stunning.

Les Mis. I started sniffling half an hour in, was bawling by the interval and wasn't quite myself for a good couple of days after. Immensely moving stuff.

Can't recommend it as haven't seen it but it's had great reviews and I'd love to see it - Sister Act!

Hmm, quite a selection to pick from. I like the sound of Hairspray, I think my H might go for that.

Not sure I could sit through Les Mis - pregnancy hormones might get the better of me!

Great suggestions so far everyone, thanks ?

Phantom of the Opera was ace - and I hate musicals.

We went to see Hairspray for our anniversary and it was so funny my H came out and the first thing he said was "I would happily go back in and see that again".

Makes you come out really upbeat and singing ?

I would love to see Wicked but not sure if I have missed it?

I was going to say Avenue Q but you have seen that, so Phantom or Lion King. I have seen these 3 and enjoyed them and am not really into musicals these are the ones I have relented on as H loves musicals.

Wicked is good too, but Phantom really is a spectacle.

I saw Wicked on Saturday night and it was amazing!

Had we had longer in London (and had lots more money!) I would have liked to have seen Sister Act, Les Mis (seen before), Phantom or Lion King.

Ah, I was going to suggest Avenue Q. ?

How about Spamalot? Is that still on?We loved it. Also, the 39 Steps at the Criterion is a blast.

Can I add Blood Brothers and Buddy to the mix? Have no idea whether the latter is still showing but its awesome......I'm a huge Rock n Roll fan though.

On my want-to-see list currently are Lion King, Wicked and Jersey Boys.

Spamalot would have been perfect, but I think we've missed it.

Some great suggestions - thanks everyone. I'll put these to my H & see what tickles his fancy

    Thanks all ?

Priscilla QOTD was outstanding, I'd see it again in a heartbeat. Go for dress circle or stalls for the best views!
