Recommend me a make up brand

Pompey, 10 April, 2012 at 20:10 Posted on Planning 0 28

I am providing my own make up to my friend who used to be a MUA and will be doing my make up on the day. What is best? Help appreciated, especially from any OMs.

I have a Revlon lipgloss that I have bought that is perfect but I am undecided and somewhat clueless on foundation, primer and eyeshadow and mascara I am reluctant to sway from the one I use.

    I had the following;

    Benefit- Porefessional Primer

    Estee Lauder- Double Wear foundation

I had eyelash extensions but if you dont go for that I would recommend either Lancome or Benefit "theyre real!" mascaras

I used MAC eyeshadows and gel liner

    Chanel bronzer and blusher

I don't know what eyebrow makeup I had, I don't wear lipgloss so my lips were nude.

    does that help at all?

A MUA HIB on here highly recommends Dior Forever Foundation or a Chanel vitasomething Aqua (sorry!!) I bought and have tried the Dior and it's AMAZING! I think I'm going to go for a NARS blusher, MAC eye colours, Shu Uemura colourless powder and a Laura Mercier primer. I've heard the Lancome waterproof mascara doesn't budge an inch either so might go for that too. Tis going to cost a small fortune but I'm buying a couple of bits every month and then I can take it all on honeymoon which will be lovely too!

I'm going all-out MAC and now I've 'discovered' it, I don't think I'll ever buy another brand - it suits me SO well. And that I think is key - it suits me. The look you're going for, how much make up you usually wear, your skin type and of course your budget will all make a big difference!

I went for full make overs, first thing in a morning, and then went about 'normal life' all day (including plenty of time outside, eating and drinking etc!) and took mental notes on how it felt during the day, at what point I got shiny (I have oily skin), if it moved at all, how the eyeshadow and lipstick lasted etc etc. I did this for Clinique, Lancome, Estee Lauder, Bare Minerals, Benefit, Bobbi Brown and MAC. I also had my base done by Laura Mercier whilst killing time before another appointment and it did look fab, but then it was removed for my other appointment. I would have liked to try a day of Laura Mercia but there isn't one near me and I was only visiting that particular city for MAC!

The one foundation I've been really warned off for weddings, purely from a photography point of view, is the Estee Lauder doublewear which unfortunately is what the Estee Lauder MUA used on me and when I had a test photo done, I looked pure white! Other MUA's have since said to me it's something about the UV protection in it, and although it's a great long-lasting foundation for 'real life', it just does rubbish things for you in flash photography. Likely to be fine in naturally-lit shots but it wasn't worth the risk IMO.

For those buying make up at the moment, Debenahs online have discounts and free postage - I've just bought a couple of MAC bits on there ?

The thing I am most worried about I think is eyes - My make up doesnt often seem to last in that area. I have used Revlon and Max Factor in the past but they still dont seem to last.

I haven't tried it myself but I've read that urban decay do a specific eye make up primer that costs about £12. I might also give my face a quick spray with hairspray!! ?

I've heard good things about Urban Decay and I wouldnt have to go into Debenhams as they have it in Boots! Mini knows why I dont want to go anywhere near the make up people in debenhams...

I went to a wedding last week and my MUA friend did my make up. She used UD eyeshadow and it lasted right untill I scrubbed it off at the end of the night.

I think you need to chat to your MUA. Different brands are better for different skins.

I personally love MAC, but that may not suit all.

It was me that recommended Dior Forever foundation - amazing stuff in the flesh and on camera. Really covers but naturally and unlike Estee Lauder photographs with a flash brilliantly. Juliet x

I use the Bare Minerals for a natural look and then add whatever I can of Christian Dior to highlight.

Ok, will vary a lot depending on your skin type etc, but my favourites at the moment are:

Foundation: Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua (the new perfection lumiere one is HORRIBLE), Dior Forever, Makeup For Ever HD foundation (get it at www.gurumakeupemporium.com) and Bourjois healthy mix - a dupe for Chanel Pro Lumiere which is now discontinued.

Concealers: I like Mac studio finish (in the round pots)

Powder: Mac pressed blot powder, can't beat it.

Eyeshadows: Chanel, Mac, Bobbi Brown, Bourjois, Nars

    Blush/Bronzers: Nars, Chanel, Bobbi Brown

Liner: Bobbi Brown gel liner is the best IMO

Lips: Chanel Glossimers, Clinique buttershine lippies

For ladies who have eyeshadow creasing problems try Nars Eyeshadow Base, nothing shifts with that stuff on. Hope that helps a bit.

Urban Decay is a winner! I have purchased their 'Naked' pallet after a very successful trial in Debenhams. Will flash later.

I would get your MUA to sort that out - it depends on your eye colour etc as well.
