Recommend your mattress

Evil Yoda, 22 July, 2009 at 11:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

I suffer with lower back problems and our mattress is now compounding the problem so we need to buy a new one. Can anyone recommend a good, firm mattress that will last at least 10 years?

As time consuming as it is you need to go and try them out. I never realised what a massive array of mattresses were out there and what I liked to sleep on until we did the whole shopping thing.

In the end we settled on one in Dreams and then I scouted online to find it cheaper (note that Dreams give them different names to make it hard to do this so you have to do some digging). We are getting http://www.bedstar.co.uk/shop/catalog/Sleepeezee_Backcare_Ultimate_2000_6FT_Superking_Mattress-p-36296.html (which is a bargain price, just shy of £1k in Dream)

My back has been much better since we bought a memory foam mattress, rather than sprung.

Blimey, that is a good price Poochanna.

Lois, do you find that the memory foam mattress makes you hot? I get really hot in bed and I've read that the memory foam mattresses can make you really hot.

I have never noticed it making me hot. We use a cotton mattress cover too though, so perhaps that's why?

We have a Tempur-Pedic which really helps with my back. I miss it terribly when we're away

I have lower back problems and like a nice firm mattress.

H and I went testing lots of beds - including pocket sprung with memory foam topping (solid memory foam was too warm) and we decided on a Rest Assured Pocket Ortho 2000:

We bought it with the divan base. It's absolute bliss to sleep in. Being pocket sprung we hardly feel each other rolling over and it's firm enough to keep us comfortable.

I'm not waking up with back ache any more, and if my back hurts when I go to bed, it doesn't when I wake up. I could stay in my bed all day long and be a very happy girl!

We bought it from MFI for a bargainous £600 including headboard.

I've heard there are two types of memory foam mattress, there is one that can make you quite hot and one that's not as bad. I've got a memory foam which is also part sprung and it's absolutely fabulous, it's very comfy but also firm. It definitely doesn't make me hot! I've had it for less than a year though so I don't know if it will last. I can't remember what it is but I'll post a link if I remember. I agree with poochanna though, you really have to go out and try them.

If you find one you like after you've tested it, just check the Argos site before ordering, as they have 15% off all mattresses until Friday when you use the code on their homepage.

We have part sprung part memory foam and it is fantasically comfortable but very very hot. I've never suffered with being too hot at night until we got the new matress and now I have to have the window open all the time.

We have a full memory foam mattress and it is so comfortable, really good for my back. I look forward to sleeping in it again when we go away regardless of how good the hotel is because I have not slept anywhere more comfortable.

We went for a 'climatemaster' one from Sleepmaster which claims all sorts of nonsense sounding stuff but it definately doesn't make me hot so maybe that's something they have fixed recently.

I got one in dreams that was about £500 reduced from £800 (if you believe that) it is 100% memory foam and I hated it with a passion for about a week as it is really firm. But now I can not rave about it enough. I have NEVER slept so well - you get so comfortable that you don't move all night. Also I have a port (on the left hand side of my ribs, under the skin) to my Gastric Band and it is a hard lump and gets quite painfull - since I have had it I was unable to sleep on my front, since the memory foam I can again as it seems to just absorb the lump like it is not there! Amazing.
