recovery after a stroke.

fiorelli, 21 June, 2009 at 22:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

My father in law called today, and dropped the bombshell that whilst on holiday a couple of weeks ago, he suffered a stroke. It appears that he is paralised down his left side, but thankfully has full speech. It is even more of a bombshell as FIL isn't what you would call a stroke candidate (other than the fact he is 65), he doesn't drink to excess, he doesn't smoke, he isn't overweight, he is fit (likes walking, and was on a walking holiday when the stroke occured!)

I suppose my question is, what is recovery after a stroke like? what are the chances of him gaining some/all feeling back? Also, what support should he and his partner be receiving? (I know that they should both have an assessment by social services, but other than that I have no idea!)

Thanks

fiorelli xx

My Granda's partner had a stroke about 2 years ago and was back to completely normal within 3 months, we were told it would take a lot longer to get her back to full health (she's not particularly healthy, high BMI, unhealthy diet, not much exercise, etc) and even then she might not recover completely but she's doing absolutely great.

I'm sorry to hear about your FIL, I hope he makes a full recovery ?

I had a series of small strokes about 3 years ago and have fully recovered. After the stokes I lost control of one side of my face and body, struggled to walk, didn't really have enough balance to manage steps, had slurred speech and was often confused and disoriented. I had a lot of physio to help me with walking, balance and general gross body movements. I'd been sick for a long time before so I also had quite a bit of personal training to recover core muscle strength I'd lost while bedridden. I didn't end up needing any speech therapy. No-one would know I'd had any strokes now except when I'm really tired or ill (my face sags a bit then). My neuro has said my brain MRIs look very good, so it is definitely possible for recovery to be complete.

My recovery took quite a while, but I think this was mainly to do with the fact I was very ill for a long time beforehand and underwent treatment (for illness, not strokes per se) that was quite harsh. I'm off to bed now but I hope your FIL also enjoys a full recovery.

Thank you for replying dopper. I'm so sorry that you have suffered stroke in the past, but please you have recovered well.

As I said earlier, it is still early days with FIL, so the full extent isn't quite known yet. I (and my husband) are taking hope from the fact that people can recover really well from a stroke.

We found out yesterday that FIL didn't have a stroke. After lots of tests, scans, a biopsy and brain surgery, my FIL has an agressive brain tumour. When he had brain surgery, they hoped to remove all of it, but instead found out that it is literally all over the place, and to cut it out....well you get the picture. he is now on steroids, and is awaiting getting stronger before they will even attempt radiotherapy. We have been told that FIL won't be going home. he will be in hospital until such time as he is strong enought to recieve the radiotherapy, and then - I don't know. My husband is in absolute bits. He lost his step-father a couple of years ago to cancer. I don't know how to help him. It isn't helping that we are not allowed near the hospital as our son has chicken pox, so my husband can't even get to see his father for at least another week. ***.

Fiorelli I'm so sorry, this must be such a blow after having one diagnosis turn in to another one. I'm not really sure what to say other than I really hope they can start the radiotherapy soon and your family can get in to see him as soon as possible.
