Recurring water infections

gemm26, 19 May, 2008 at 09:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Does anyone suffer with recurring water infections/cystitis? I am sick (am work probably are too!) of having bloody water infections. I feel achy around the kidneys and sick with it too as well as the obvious symptoms, I do go to the docs about it but they alway just write me a prescription for antibiotics, say some people are just prone to things, and off I go. I am just a bit concerned that I seem to get it a fair bit.

Does anyone have any practical advise, other than don't wear thongs!!!

    Good advice

It is important to drink sufficiently, so the bladder is flushed thoroughly.

During urination the bladder should be emptied completely. It is a bad habit to sit on the toilet bent forward and reading while urinating.

A trick is to place yourself backwards on the toilet, so you lean against the wall. This posture is more suitable in securing a complete emptying of the bladder than the usual sitting posture.

Warm clothes on the lower part of the body will also help prevent cystitis.

As a prevention, it may be helpful to drink cranberry juice every day or take capsules. There is no doubt that this simple and natural treatment may help to reduce the frequency of recurrent infections. It is thought that the cranberry juice works by preventing common bacteria from ‘sticking’ to the walls of the bladder and so preventing infection taking hold.

Urination immediately after sexual intercourse will flush out most bacteria from the urethra.

Try to urinate at least once every three hours. Women who avoid urination for long periods suffer from more infections of the urinary system.

Ah, you have my sympathies. Horrible isn't it?

After my 14th visit to the Doctors in 9 months she said enough was enough and booked me an appointment with a specialist. I had to have my bladder and kidneys scanned, which showed no problems so the specialist put me on a long course of trimethoprim which seemed to do the trick. The next step would have been a cystoscopy.

I used to get cystitis a fair bit but started drinking cranberry juice - actually cranberry & orange as I find cranberry by itself too tart.

It was absolutely done the trick - a large glass every couple of days is plenty.

I second what Visteroo said, I used to suffer this frequently too and going for a wee as soon after sex as possible has made a huge difference.

If it were me, and the antibiotics hadn't knocked it on the head, I would want it investigated further. I would ask for a scan to check that there isn't a problem just so it puts your mind at rest if nothing else. Next time you go to your doctor I would say that you are not prepared to just be put on another course of antibiotics until the next time it flares up and want to be referred to a urologist. If you get no joy with that doctor then tell them you will seek a second opinion.

I know that a lot of women are prone to urine infections, my neighbour is and was put on a 2 month course of antibiotics which do seem to have sorted it out, however they were willing to investigate further had this not worked.

    Hope you feel better soon!

What everyone else said, especially having a wee after sex and drinking cranberry juice.

How long are the courses of antibiotics you're being given? I'm really prone to cystitis and went through a phase of having infection after infection. The docs would give me a 5 day course of anti-bs but I think this just controlled the infection rather than killing it off completely so it came back after a few days. A two week course of trimethoprim sorted me out, plus about a litre of cranberry juice a day!

I tend to be more suceptible if I'm a bit run down, stressed or have pre-period water retention. I've had to train myself to drink more water too, I think I was chronically dehydrated.

Hope you feel better soon, it's really miserable.

    Hiya.

I had several kidney infections over a short period of time, cystoscopy and ultrasound were normal, I did end up having a urethral dilatation under general anaesthetic which seems to have done the trick nicely! Because my urethra was so tight my bladder couldn't empty properly. I now wee as often as socially acceptable and drink cranberry jucie, wee after sex etc.

I did end up going private for the op (can't remember why though, it may have been because I went private with the cystoscopy on my parents' insurance after two NHS cancellations). So I didn't have to do the longterm ABs but that would have been an option too.

    HTH
