Redundancy and job hunters kleek

Redbedhead, 5 January, 2009 at 15:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

How is everyone? I am hoping we have a few graduates and no new members........

Anything on the horizon for anyone?

I have an interview on Friday which I am hoping will come to something plus a couple of other things that may lead to more but could take a month or two, which is ok with me.

Glider - do you have a start date for your job yet?

Pooch - what did you decide to do about the job you mentioned on here?

I suppose technically I'm not a member any more.

I have a contract with the administrators for 2009. Although we get no benefits i.e. pension, life assurance, health care etc. To make up for it we get a 25% pay rise.

I also have an interview tomorrow for a role that actually sounds quite interesting and is more than my current salary (pre payrise as new salary is bonkers).

    Good luck to everyone else.

    That's great news Alison.

I have graduated Smiley smile Today is my first day working for the company that took over the last one I worked for. Its a new contract for me, I have no office (end of the month), no equipment, no access to their network and nothing to do today but hey its a job and hopefully it will all work out.

Nothing to report here really. I haven't done much today as I figured first day back people would be busy so I'm making tomorrow my call around day to recruiters.

I'm going to the interview for the job I mentioned on Wednesday. There's no way I can take it (if offered) but it's a pretty full on interview with a test so I've figured the experience will be good and should set me up well for any other interviews I get. I am waiting to hear back from two jobs I applied for before Christmas, one of which I'd love. I'm going to chase those tomorrow. There's also another job come up that sounds amazing and I'd love so I've applied for that and just waiting to hear.

I'm just struggling with how slow it is. I've never been out of work before and I'm bored to death!

Glad things are a little more positive you end and Alison the 25% increase sounds rather fab! How long can you stay there for?

    I know what you mean!

I only have about 2 hours a day while the baybeh is sleeping to call around and I have not done anything on it today either for the same reason. I will do some calls tomorrow but today I have done some research on the company I am seeing Friday.

Good luck on Wednesday - as you say it is all experience. Is there a chance they will have something else come up more suited to your level?

Good to hear of another graduate? Hopefully they will get the equipment / network issues sorted by tomorrow!

Thanks all for the good wishes.

The contract is for 2009 but obviously at any time they can give me my marching orders. We're going to be very strictly monitored on objectives and attaining objectives so it could be quite a productive place. Plus I'm being trained in all sorts of new stuff so I'm adding extra strings to my bow.

I've told agencies I'm no longer being flexible on salary (they didn't like this) - but I'm basing my salary as at pre-payrise.

I'm just going to put the extra each month in to a savings account and we'll be seeing a financial advisor shortly to sort out a pension for me and a few other things.

    Nothing for me either.

There seems to be very little out there and the two airlines that are advertising for Sales Managers are offering ridiculously low salaries. I know I'll have to take a pay cut but these work out at nearly 50%!

I've applied for a job online at a division of Accenture. It's quite a niche role and I've done a very similar job before so I hope I'll get an interview at least but I haven't heard anything yet and it's impossible to contact the Accenture HR dept.

Good luck to everyone that has interviews.

    Hi Guys

I'm not quite in this kleek but feel like I may be soon. I work for a big charity and we are coming toward the end of six weeks of consultation, and then we are restructured. My job doesn't exist in the new restructure, and the one that closests matchs it is a grade above my current job. I have no idea what is going to happen and what will change, if I will be reslotted somewhere else or if they will make me redundant or if grades will be changed at the end of consultation. Its so hard not knowing.

Anyway trying to be positive I will get a bit of a payout (about 5k) and my husband can pay the mortgage, bills, food etc but it will be really really tight and I will get to spend more time with our duaghter.

Its good to hear people are getting jobs.

    Helen

I too may be joining soon.

My company was bought over 2 weeks ago and we were told last week that 45 shops out of 130 are being shut and we're one of them. So we are now in closing down sale and probably shut in around 2 weeks. Find out this week if myself and the Manager can be transfered to Past Times as they need a Manager and Assistant Manager. If not then hopefully I can get into the local council or at our local Barclays as they are needing people.

Better get back to sorting the CV out....

    Jo

Well my calls this morning have come to nothing. There's one great job advertised and the girl would really like to put me forward but they will only see people with 6 months legal experience. This means that even though I have years more event experience than anyone else on their books they can't send my details over. So annoying!

No one else has anything new and the freelance lady I spoke to said it's taking her over a month to get companies to sign jobs off whereas it was taking a few days. She has 4 days awaiting sign off but she thinks that will be in February!

I'm at a loss now as to what to do. I fear I'll never work again ?

Not sure if it will help anyone, but we're on the look-out for a PA to our new director http://www.nimr.mrc.ac.uk/jobs/2008/731/

It's a great place to work with loads of civil service perks.

I may be here next week. Had a call to say the boss is still in discussions with accountants etc, so not to come back to work this week and I should know on Monday.

Nice that I am getting paid for being at home, but would prefer to be at work to be honest.

? Well on the plus side I've two definite interviews, and a third that we're just trying to arrange a suitable time subject to childcare. However two of those are full time and the other isn't something I'm hugely excited about. I'm just so fecked off that I might need to go back full time just because there are aren't any part time positions out there. I know that I can eventually put a flexible working request in but I want to just wor three days dammit.

Actually job hunting with a toddler is much harder than I thought, I'm having to pull in favours left right and centre for childcare for interviews etc, and even talking to agencies and HR people is a pain as it has to be timed around what B is doing. YEsterday for example I was trying to arrange a meeting with someone whilst B was lying in a snowdrift and when I'd managed to grapple him up he threw my phone (I was still connected) into the snow, cutting me off.

Still there is some vague hopeful news in that one of the interviews I went for prior to Christmas seems pretty interested, they would be creating a new role for me and are aware that I'd ideally like to work p/t so fingers crossed. If I haven't heard anything tomorrow then I shall do a bit of chasing I think.

Oh, and I went to sign on today. Hate it ☹️

It's awful isn't it? I'm starting to feel the same. It's the waiting that so difficult. I've applied for my dream job online but haven't heard anything.

I've also been told by agencies that people are taking longer to confirm vacancies.

I have been having similar problems. H has had to take a half day on Friday and then work from home the rest of the day so I can go to one interview and I have been trying to time phone calls for when G is napping but it doesn't always work like that and I have done a few while she is eating her dinner as at least then she is generally quiet!

No start date for bmi as yet...

    Further developments:

Have got offered Thomas Cook as cabin crew, again no start date as yet...

Have an Air Traffic Controller`s interver at the end of the month...

Have an interview for the ETIHAD pilot interview scheme, which would see them pay for all of my pilot training and then a job for 5 years in Abu Dhabi...

Can i join? I was due to start a new job in Dec but they decided the night before that they couldn't offer it any longer ☹️

I've been job hunting ever since, and not getting anywhere fast much to my annoyance! Has anyone got any other websites that they use for searching for jobs? I think i've looked at all the ones i can remember and fried my brain trying to find others!

What sites are you using? Most of the ones I use are specifically for accountancy and finance roles so may not be of use. I also check on Totaljobs and Jobsearch.

I'm not sure if I technically qualify as I was made redundant nearly 18 months ago, but as I had just found out I was pregnant at the time, I decided to take the time to enjoy my baby and start looking in 2009.

Only now we're here in 2009 and the job market in my industry and locations stinks - there's been one major company relocating and another gone bust - and a quick look on the usual industry recruitment websites reveals nothing that would even be vaguely suitable.

I've got the grace of a few months mortgage payments in savings, but am seriously worried if nothing comes up. I was the main wage earner before all of this and whilst I can take a cut of 15% on my previous salary and for us to still be ok after childcare, there's just nothing even in that lower ball park. I'd been with the previous company for 7 years so it's been a long time since I've had to do any job hunting!
