Redundancy Clique: A not so funny

Fandango, 9 January, 2009 at 11:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Got a call today to say that a job I'd been told was a dead cert wasn't going to happen. It would seem that they love me but after redoing some sums they just can't afford to take anyone on right now yadda yadda blah blah. Apparently they'll get in touch as soon as the situation changes. Anyway the agent was being very sympathetic and saying how awful the market is and started telling me how he dreads turning on the tv to see the news because of all the economic doom and gloom and job cuts. I may have been a little curt in pointing out that when you're unemployed it hurts a bit more. So how's anyone else getting on? Any more graduates this week?

Still waiting to hear if I'm going to join the redundancy clique - should know by Monday, and the waiting is driving me mad, as I am stuck in a sort of "limbo" phase - still oficially employed, but at home waiting for "the" call.

Perhaps the person at the agency was worried about their job, as if there are less jobs to go round, companies aren't going to use agencies as much, and I can see a lot of employment agency staff beginning to have to look for work as well. The couple I have rung have basically said as much.

It is blooming hard out there. I'd be prepared to do anything really when the time comes, but have a problem in the fact that I really need to find a job that finishes by 2.30pm, as my son is still at school, and this is cutting my options.

I'm sort of joining the redundancy clique. I've taken voluntary redundancy from work, and finish at the end of the month, but I shan't be looking for another job for over a year as I'll be on 'maternity leave' first.

Best of luck to everyone who's job-hunting at the moment.

That`s not great and sorry to hear it. I`m still just waiting for start dates, but just hate the wait now! bmi have stopped their recruitment, so hoping they start their training soon! I`m wishing you a lot better luck for the future.

That is crap Fandango and so disappointing for you.

I have just had an interview this morning. I liked the bloke who was interviewing me and we seemed to get on well. I can definitely do the job but I think one of the things they will worry about is whether I will cost too much money.

I did get two corkers in the interview - How old are you? and my personal favourite - are you planning any more children?!!

MrG had his hours cut by 40% this week, which (although isn't as bad as a full redundancy) is really crap as we're in the middle of buying a new house and buying a new (2nd hand) car - which is vital, our currant one is written off.

It's so crap. MrG might still get made redundant; I hating waiting games, but obviously glad he still has a job.....

I've sort of given up looking now. I'm just hoping that the freelance work I've been promised is going to come off. H is in line for 5 positions and there's a lot of interest in him so we are really hopeful he'll get a job quickly so we are pinning all our hopes on him at the moment.

I had a real push yesterday and emailed everyone that's planning an event in Birmingham from Taste to the Rotary Club to the NHS and I've had a few good responses and chances to pitch for work so I think staying freelance is going to be my only real chance.

I actually feel much better now I've backed off from getting a full time job as it just wasn't going to happen.

That sounds really positive for your H - will keep my fingers crossed for him.

Glad you are feeling better about things as well.

Hi can I join the kleek please.

I didnt get to come on hitched much after returning to work after maternity leave but I have just found out yesterday I am being made redundant. The joys. My OH job is very uncertain too, so its a bit of a nightmare.

Pooch - I've got a contact in Birmingham Rotary if it's any use to you?

Redbedhead - I can't BELIEVE you were asked those old chestnuts!! That's awful! I hope you were cutting in your response?

Isn't it illegal to ask those questions?

I believe both questions are illegal!

Tbh the age one doesn't bother me particularly - he would have been able to guess my age to within a year or two from my CV. The child one I think is a bit cheeky but I can see why he did it (small company and I would be running it with him, effectively as 2nd in command). Doesn't make it right though!! I meant to mention it to the recruitment guy as he would have had a pink fit about it I imagine!
