Redundancy / job hunters kleek

Redbedhead, 3 December, 2008 at 14:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

How is everyone?

I am bored of this all already? Nothing job wise has come up and most of the positions seem to be being put on hold till January.

I am waiting to hear from the partner I used to work for who is now going out on his own and am hoping that will turn in to something.

And I am now officially unemployed as the redundancy was confirmed at 10am yesterday. I had a few tears afterwards which was weird in that I am not desperately upset about it, I think it was just not the nicest way to end at a company where I have been for over 7 years. Logically it isn't a bad move providing I can find a new job within a few months.

I have to wait until the 19th December for the redundancy payment / payment in lieu of notice etc as they are making everyone wait until the December pay run.

Anyone else graduated from the kleek other than Legless? Legless - when do you start the new job?

I'm still here. Nothing much happening job wise but I'm not bored. In fact, I must get on with the painting. H always said he'd rather earn the money to pay someone to decorate rather than do it himself - and thats what he's getting at the moment!

As difficult and uncertain as it is, try and make the most of your time while you don't have a job.

    January 5th.

It's a relief to have something and not to have to do the soul destroying jobsearch anymore (I really do feel for you, its horrible) but I have to say I'll go insane with this month off and no money to have fun with. the last 6 weeks have taken their toll, i look not like death warmed up, but like death that needs defrosting, its all so stressful and scary.

Sorry to hear your redundancy was confirmed - i hope you get something soon.

Bored bored bored! I`m waiting for a London interview date for Air Traffic Control, they currently have dates for Manchester and Glasgow grrr.

Have applied to in the last couple days: TUi as a travel consultant and emailled a few flying schools in the area just to see if they need anyone like groundschool or ground handling and working reception etc. Have also applied to work a 3 month contract at Southampton Airport which closes today.

Next interview is at West Drayton on tuesday for BMi as Cabin Crew...

I am still jobless. I never heard back from the lady last week about the event pitch so I've now written that off ? There's a possible P/T job at an art gallery that I was supposed to hear about on Monday and didn't. I have applied for a 4-month project and should hear next week if I've been called to interview. I'm now on the books with two recruiters who are hopeful they can find me something, my CV has gone of today for a year old contract in Leeds. If I get that I'd have to live there Monday-Friday ?

None of these are ideal but I'd take just about anything right now!

At least there are options now though, up until last week I didn't even have that, so I'm just trying to stay upbeat and hopeful.

Fingers crossed for everyone else ?

I would like to do more but it is difficult as the only 'spare' time I get is when my 9 month old is asleep and then I can't really do anything noisy so it tends to be cleaning which inevitably gets boring?

? Sorry, completely oblivious that you had a child. That does make it much harder to do anything. My spare time is Monday to Friday 8.30 to 5.30 - while H is at work ?. No children here so much easier - and just as well as I've been sanding (again) today.

Don't apologise. In some ways I find it frustrating as there are lots of things I could do around the house - painting, sanding etc but I can't really get dirty with paint etc as if she wakes and I have to get her, it could get messy! Plus we try and do painting etc when she isn't in the house so she doesn't inhale the fumes.

I try and use it to call agencies etc but inevitably I can't get hold of them at that time, then they call back just as I am doing her dinner (now) and we play telephone tag for a few days!

Pooch - I am also finding it desperately frustrating that I don't get responses to things. I understand companies are busy but all it takes really is for them to just acknowledge me. I would rather they said 'Thanks but no thanks' than to just hear nothing at all.

Well, I heard from the partner I used to work with and there is a definite opportunity there. He said he has only been going since the 1st December but already has a few jobs coming in and wants to keep in touch.

The best bit is that I said I would like part time work ideally and he said that suits him best, particularly at the start as he probably can't afford more than that at the moment. He also said he wouldn't have anything for a month or two, which is great as well as I can't start until mid January (due to child care) even if I gave notice to the nursery now.

He did say don't stop looking for other things (which I wouldn't have done anyway) in case things don't pick up as he hopes them to, but all in all it was quite positive.

And I have another agency interview next week.

Yeay, sounds pretty positive RBH, good luck

A few whiffs of jobs here but nothing concrete at all - a few places have been interested in my experience and skills but are restructuring / head count freeze / not doing anything 'til the new year. After moaning with a friend about the crappiness of having to go back to work full time (because there are so few vacancies at all, let alone anything part time) she pointed out a mutual friend in the same boat with whom I have a good skills fit. We've discussed it and if a suitable position arises we might present ourselves as a job share.

I got my RP2 form from the insolvancy service to apply for my notice in lieu payment and so hopefully will get something from that and I've finally started to accept that this whole finding a new job thing is going to take some time so have decided to go ahead and apply for Job Seekers Allowance [:'(]

There is one job which is vaguely right in that it's part time and in something I've an interest in, but I'm hugely over experienced and the pay isn't great. I'm going to apply for it anyway but I'm a bit unsure as to how to complete the form. Do I list my full experience and skills and risk being chucked out 'cos they think I'm going to be demanding pay rises and more responsibility, or do I down play it? Or am I worrying too much?

Is there a chance to speak to someone about the role first? I have applied for a few roles that are the sort of thing I was doing 8 - 10 years ago but is easier to do part time. I am also struggling with what to say if asked about the fact that I am over qualified.

Hopefully now some of the stress has been lifted you can start to relax a bit and start to feel refreshed for your new job. Shame you have no money to play with though. I am the opposite - I have redundancy money to play with (or will on the 19th) but don't dare spend it in case we need it for living expenses!

Oh glider that's really pants! What about someone like Emirates and working our of Dubai, would that appeal (I only mention them as a friend got a job with them when she struggled).

Good news about the possible job RBH, I'll keep my fingers crossed that comes off.

    Congratulations Legless!

I have turned a corner today, I've realised that I can't actually do anything that I'm not already doing and if the gods decide I'm unemployable and we lose our house then so be it. I'm going to chill out about it now and what will be will be!

    ? Can I join?

I have been unemployed since July, had a few interviews but they haven't come to anything. I have just applied for a couple of part time jobs through agencies, which means more agency interviews and doing their stupid assessment. I have registered with so many agencies, its ridiculous.

It is disheartening, but the only good thing is I get more time to spend with my daughter. I also hate going to the Job Centre every fortnight. They do nothing down there to help you out.

Mrs_C - that is what I keep thinking, although being in this situation now isn't great, at least it means I get more time with my daughter.

Anyway, I had some good news last night. I had applied online for a job last week and didn't hear anything so had written it off. I got a call from the agency apologising for not having been in touch sooner and saying I was a great fit for the job and they would like to put me forward asap. She agreed to send me the details through and asked that I call her today if I want to be put forward. When I said I would call in the afternoon she then said she would like to get my CV off first thing, so just to email her and then we can talk in more detail in the afternoon.

The job looks a good long term prospect although will be full time which isn't my first choice but looks like something I could eventually do part time, which is good news.

    Fingers crossed eh!

    Congrats Legless

I've applied for a few more jobs. I'm hoping that I get an interview for a marketing and sales officer role at a college that I applied for last week. It look me hours to write a personal statement.

I'm still temping til the end of the month, the work will continue after that but if they don't get any order they won't be able to pay me which is a massive worry.

I sent of my redudancy form weeks ago and haven't heard anything - is that normal?
