Redundancy / job hunters kleek

Redbedhead, 21 January, 2009 at 14:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

How is everyone doing? Any graduates?

We seem to be in good company as I heard on the radio this morning that the number of unemployed people is the highest it has been for 10 years and the numbers of redundancies per month are the highest in even longer than that. Not great news really.

Anyway, I had an interview this morning which I think they will let me know about today or tomorrow. It is a great job and they are happy for me to work 4 days a week but the travel is horrible (over an hour each way) which when factored in to the working day means I will have to drop G off at nursery as it opens and collect her as it shuts. Not great really and doesn't leave any margin for error if the roads are bad. Anyway, I will consider that all if they make me an offer.

I have another interview on Friday for a role I am quite interested in. It is local and unfortunately full time but does have the potential to be part time in the long term. It is the first role that has offered a similar salary to my previous job as well which is good news. So fingers crossed please!

    Hi Guys

I'm just reading this with interest, the restructure at work means that I will be made redundant in may.

Thats sounds like great new RBH. I actually do this at the moment (including the travel), with the traveling I feel like I'm working full time but it is great having the Friday off, I'm really hoping to find a local job next time where I don't have to commute. Will G be in a nursery near by? There can have quite a few sick days at the start for a number or reasons.

I have an assessment to become an Air Traffic Controller on friday, so that should be interesting!

RBH, it`s tough when you go for a job with a commute like that, I know i commuted to Gatwick over a distance of 70 miles, not good in rush hour, and you don`t half get stressed! But then again it`s nice winding down time on the way home!

That is great news! When would you start the training if they accepted you?

Do you have a start date yet for the other job you got?

It is good to know someone who already does this - I may be trying to pick your brains soon then if it is offered! The nursery we have is bear home - that way at least if I have a problem it is easy for H or possibly my Mum to pick up G. If we went with a nursery near this place it would mean I always have to do all collections and drop offs which isn't great. Both of the Directors have children so did say they are sympathetic to nursery issues etc but I don't know how far that would extend!

I had all the security forms through from Thomas Cook the other day, so that looks promising! Still waiting to hear from bmi, but they are starting their training now, but there are a fair few people on the waiting list before me, so have to hope they get to me soon!

Not sure how long, I think I would need a further interview after this one friday. But you have to try everything and see what happens at the end of the process.

Oh I agree. In this market you would be silly not to.

Feel free to pick my brains.

This is issue is a real balancing act, I'm still not easy 12 mnths on.

If you have a nursery near by: Pros your H can pick her up and she spends less time traverling. She can go there if you have a sick day. Cons if H can't pick her up your an hour away, your hours drive means you see less of her and she is doing very long days at nursery and you spend less time with her at home.

If you have a nursey near by: Pros your near by and can pick her if she has a tempreture and you see more of her because she comes in the car with you, Isobel does it twice a week and she sleeps or we chat (well sort of). she does shorter days at nursery. Cons Although Isobel is used to it she doesn't always find the hour in the car fun - oh yes and hour of screaming toddler is just how to start your day, your H can't pick her up and you can't use it when your ill.

Its difficult but you just have to do the best you can and the day off is just fantastic.

I'm still here. Have just been out to post an application for a job that seems made just for me. The description is just what I want but its also very local - 5 minutes drive/30 minutes walk. I really, really want it! Strange that I've seemed to hit on my perfect job without finding anything else!

I've hit the 13 week mark on signing on (even though its been since August ?) so I now have to go to the job centre every week. Wouldn't be too bad if I thought they might be able to help but they haven't done anything helpful/useful since I started going there.

Still nothing my end! 4 of the jobs I was in for have been pulled this week, which isn't good. I have tried to get some temp work but even that is rubbish. I have 4 days work next month which is ok but they have cut my usual rate in half, which isn't so great.

I'm having a really "down" day with it today. Things are just so slow. There's a guy I know who wants me to do some work for him and I'm meeting him in a couple of weeks. It's pretty cool work and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it all goes ahead.

H isn't really getting anywhere. He was offered a contract last week but it's turned out to be the wrong language so he's back to square one and there's nothing on the horizon for him either. It's like the elephant in the room at the moment and we are trying to stay positive and pray that something comes up in time.

Really pleased to hear some positive news from fellows kleeksters, let's hope it rubs off on everyone else ?

Glider, Have TC offered you a job? They are notoriously slow at getting the paperwork out (their HR admin is outsourced and it seems to have slowed everything down) - it took me nearly a month to get a written job offer from them and even then some of the details were wrong! A

I'm still here, did my phone call to the Jobcentre yesterday for signing on and got my face to face interview 9am monday morning. Still waiting on the council getting back to me about whether or not i have interview s or not even though the first lot of jobs I applied for closed on the 12th and it's now the 21st.

Have applied to the ELC for their assistant manager position, but not sure when the closing date is on that.

Got a couple of jobs to look at for Police support, so I'd better actually look at what I've downloaded...
