Redundant - now what?

Kegsey, 29 July, 2008 at 10:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I'm redundant as of Friday and I haven't anything lined up yet. I assume I need to sign on but I have no idea where/when/how. What do I do now?

Oh what a shame, was it expected?

From what I can remember, I made an appointment at my local job centre and took my P45 and bank details. They asked me lots of questions and arranged payment of my money every second week and gave me my UB40. I then had to take this down every 2 weeks to the job centre where they would stamp it and ask questions such as "have you been actively seeking employment" etc. This is going back to 1993 though but I would imagine its pretty much the same procedure. Fortunately I found work pretty quickly so only claimed for about a month or two.

I hope you find something as quick.

Give you local Jobcentre a call, their number should be in the yellow pages. For most of the UK a claim is taken over the phone and an appointment booked at the local jobcentre. Some areas are still on the old system of clerical claims but the local jobcentre will advise you of their procedures.

Completely expected, FluffyDuck - I've known that I would (but not exactly when) since last November. I knew about signing on but not how or where. I haven't been out of work since 1991 and I lived in a completely different area! Yellow pages is a good start, Little Chilli, I never thought of that. I looked on line but it seems to all be about finding a new job and not about having just lost one.

Mad, I think all I'll be able to claim is job seekers - H earns too much and we have savings. I'm not so bothered about the money but that my NI stamp will be paid until I get another job.

Thanks all, thats gives me something to go on ?

I hadn;t even considered the NI stamp thing. i too don;t think i'll be entitled to anything else as hubby earns too much (unfortunatleyt though I will need to be bringing in some money or we won;t be able to pay the mortgage, not ideal as I had a baby at the end of last year and would have liked a bit more time off)

That doesn't sound like a good position Mad. I hope you get something suitable sorted quickly.

I'm not stressing too much at the moment, the redundancy pay will keep us afloat for a short while. I definately need to go and speak to someone to find out what the best thing is to do.

I hope things work out ok for you. its a bit naff being made redundant.

Thanks Mad. In my case its a bit of a blessing. I didn't enjoy my job but its never been high enough on the list of priorities to do anything about it. Well now I have to. I can afford to be out of work until maybe the end of the year so I have the time to sort myself out and find a job I (should) enjoy.

Are you "at risk of redundancy" or are you working notice? If the latter (not so sure about the former), then dont' forget you can take reasonable time off for interviews.
