Registrar...

Lady_Witch, 13 January, 2013 at 14:44 Posted on Planning 0 7

So, we made a provisional booking at our preferred venue yesterday, and now have 4 weeks to pay a deposit... However, I don't want to pay the deposit until we've booked the Registrar, which you can't do more than a year in advance... Four weeks takes us to the 8th Feb, and we're getting married on the 8th Feb next year... Do you think the Registrar would be willing to pencil us in slightly before the 'year' mark or will it have to be done on the day? Or would they count the 9th as the first day I could book?

I rang the registrar because we have a similar situation. He told me they can't hold the date for you, but he did check the date to find out whether there were any bookings for that day...which there weren't when I rang earlier this week. He told me they have two teams, so if one gets booked for the time we are looking at the other team can do it. Or worse case if both were booked for the time we are looking at we can have it at a different time. I'd suggest ringing the registrar, the one I spoke to was very helpful.

If I was you I'd call up the registrar and explain the situation. If they cant take a booking at that point then ask the date and time that you can book, and just make sure you call as soon as they open. If I remember rightly we did this and I had any time I wanted for the day and it was fine. Ask your venue what ppl normally do if booking in advance. Some have gd relationships with registrars and can also talk to them (as if it's a popular venue they make a lot of busines for the registrars) x

We booked the Registrar more than a year in advance, it's just giving Notice that you have to do between 1 year and 15 days from the wedding date.

This is in Devon, maybe Register Offices in other areas have different rules.

My fiancé and I had the same problem. The thing is whilst we couldn't book the registrar then neither could anyone else. So we paid our deposit (because we didn't want someone having a church ceremony to book it). We got it pencilled in for the date we wanted at the registrars office and made or appointment to give notice on our "Minus one year wedding anniversary". We took the whole day off work to do it and then went for a weekend away to celebrate.

I booked my registrar last February and get married this August. But that was is in Essex so it might be different in other districts.

We could only secure our registrar a year before. I rang as soon as the office opened on that day and got the time we wanted. I can't recall when we first paid money to the venue but it could well have been just before booking the registrar.

Why don't you speak to the venue and explain the situation and see if they'll be happy waiting a couple of extra days? We asked similar of our venue and they've been very accommodating with things like that.

I think different registrars must do things differently depending on district as ours is booked for May 2015 already. Medway in south east.

The registrar local to our venue was able to pencil us in, then when it got to a year away we gave notice.
