Registrar Help

missqueenvee, 17 September, 2015 at 13:07 Posted on Planning 0 14

Next Tuesday will be the one year mark until I get married. Im getting married at Rufford Old Hall but that isn't my local council.

If im ringing to book my registrar on Tuesday, do I also ring my local council to give notice ? Im confused... ive emailed both councils and their replies didn't make much sense.

It is quite confusing..here's what we did we booked our registrar in the area we were getting married when we booked our venue in July 2013 for our wedding in July 2014 we then gave notice in our local registry office in September 2013...don't worry too much though when you book your registrar they will give you clearer instructions on what you need to do next.

    1. Give notice to your local county

    2. Once that's done you can book the registrar for the county you will be getting married in!

    Hope this helps! :-)

    Im doing the same.

You have to give notice in the area where you are registered as living. This is because they have to list your notice on the local boards where people might know you. That covers the legality aspect.

Once that has been done, you can get married where you like, they will just need to see the notice - which the council will sort.

Make sure you sort your notices asap - you can do it up to 12 months in advance, then you can just deal with the registrar

    Happy planning!

Book the registrar as soon as you can. Don't wait to give notice first. You need to make sure there will be someone available to come and perform the ceremony at your chosen time. I'm sure you'll be fine a year out but as you can give notice as any time I would definitely recommend booking the registrar as soon as.

As far as I'm aware, notice MUST be given first for you to book a registrar, but that just might be Devon/Cornwall council.

Our registrars were happy to take a provisional booking, but would only confirm once we had given notice.

Yes it might be area dependent. We booked registrar the same day as booking the venue and gave notice afterwards but they were in different boroughs too so maybe that's a factor?

We booked the registrar with two years in advance. And she said when it's less than 12 months that we would need to go to our local office to give notice.

I booked registrar last week for June 2017 but it is only provisional until we give notice where we live which can't be done until 12 months before

We had to book the registrar before we confirmed our venue booking, as it would cost us to change dates with the venue! So we made a provisional booking with the venue, called the registrar in the county where the venue is (Hampshire) and confirmed that. Then gave notice when we had a year to go in the county where we live (Berkshire) Smiley smile

Hope that helps! I found it confusing too, but the gov.uk website helps too: https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/what-you-need-to-do
