Registrar Question

HisPuzzlePiece, 14 February, 2011 at 18:09 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi all, sorry I'm a newbie here. Got engaged christmas 09 but finally starting to plan properly!

I have a question though.. Does anyone know if you can/how easy it is to choose your registrar?

Let me explain. We plan to get married 30th May 2011, and preferably want a civil ceremony somewhere. However, my fiance's Step-mother is a registrar and we would quite like her to perform the ceremony. I want to find out what the deal would be BEFORE i approach her, to avoid awkwardness/embarassment etc.

Has anyone done this? Please help Smiley smile

Em xx

You can't pick and choose your registrar! That would be opening up SO many doors for fraud...

You get whoever they appoint, although some areas let you meet the people who will be conducting your ceremony in advance.

My best friend got married in Warwickshire about 4/5 years ago. She had an old family friend who was a registrar in Humberside conduct her ceremony so it is possible. I don't know the hoops they had to jump through other than the fact that the local registrars had to give permission and that at least one registrar from the local office had to be there (you usually have two anyway).

It is worth calling he registry office in the area you are getting married and asking whether it is at all possible, and what you would need to do in order to make it happen. If it is possible you can then mention it to the person you would like to marry you.

By no means is it the 'norm' and they would never advertise it, but from what I've seen with my friend there is definitely no harm in asking.

It is possible for a Registrar from another district to do your wedding. As has been said earlier there are 2 at your wedding anyway and she would take one of their places. However you would still have to pay the usual ceremony fee.

You must book as soon as possible and when you give notice say that you would like your family member to officiate/register at the ceremony. You may need to put your request in writing.

You should then ask your fiance's step-mother to contact the superintendent of your registration district to get permission. This is usually given by the 'Proper Officer'.

I have never known such a request be refused.

Yes it is posible and someone we know did this, they wanted a friend who was a registrar to marry them but he was from another distict to the one they were marrying in so they still had to pay for another registrar even though they just sat at the side and watched, apparently they have to be there to oversee it all goes to plan etc and an official regisrtar from the district you marry in has to attend by law, even if you dont use their services.

You'd think it would be possible and not fraudulent as so many people whose Dad's are vicars are married by them. I know my friend from school was married by his Dad.

I aksed my local registrars if I could request certain individuals - or rather request to NOT have one certain individual - and they came back with a resounding NO.

Registrars aren't allowed to decline a job based on personal preference, and neither can the couples. Since many registrars work part time on a day by day basis they can only declare when they are available - although many registrars have certain venues that they cover more frequently than others.

I was told I could have someone else to do readings or vows, but the legal bit has to be done by the appointed local registrar and superitendant.

Maybe it's different in different areas.

The point you have made is valid and most registration districts would say the same. You can't specifically request a man for instance, as you are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of gender (in the workplace). The workplace for a registrar is considered wherever they do their job.

Very often you may take someone's notice and the couple then feel that as they now have a rapport with you that it would be nice if you did their wedding. This, also, would generally not be granted, as the rota for working weekends is often done by people who's job is solely to conduct weekend ceremonies. They do not have any other involvement in registration work and also it would therefore be very difficult to meet the couple in advance..

However, requesting a friend/family member is quite a different request and is usually accommodated.
