Removal company questions

Doughnut, 29 April, 2009 at 19:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Sorry, I am going to bore you all to death until we move ?

Do they take your furniture apart? Like dining tables, beds, and stuff? Do they pack for you, or just move?

I am tempted to use the little green bouncy man...

My friends husband owns a removal company, and they will actually pack for you... but it's an extra charge. Which is quoted for depending on what/how much work you want from them.

My wonderful FIL is paying so I think we can have what want ? I don't mind packing but the moving bit would be fab for someone else to do.

When we moved last year we packed everything up ourselves and took the big items of furniture apart. Then the removal guys came along when we were in Court passing contract and loaded it all in their van. By the time we got back they were finished loading and ready to go!

It was brilliant, the first time we've ever had removals guys in and it made life sooooooo much easier it was definitely worth the money.

The company that did ours were really good Doughnut, and a good price (though we weren't paying ?). I can't remember what they are called though, so will have to ask my husband later.

Anyway, they wrapped the sofas, and white goods etc in little sleeping bags. They pack up the TV, and generally handle anything tricky. We did things like taking the bed apart before they came. They also supplied hanging boxed for clothes, which is pretty standard. As we weren't going far, they used a smaller truck and did 2 runs, which helped to bring the cost down.

Thanks all. I'm looking forward to it. I moved 5 times or more in my Fiat Seicento when I was renting so this will be fab ?

Our bed broke, it's pine and one of the supporting bits had a knot, so I sort of nailed it back together with these strips of metal with holes in, so the only way that's coming out is if we saw it up ?

Most removal companies will also prefer to pack as then any breakages are insured.

Hi Doughnut, glad to hear things ar eprogressing nicely! We moved last Friday and we used a removal company to pack for us, to be honest, wasn't really that much more expensive. We lived in a one bed flat (but had loads of stuff squirrelled away!) and the charge to move us was £450 and another £150 to pack everything. And as someone else has already mentioned, if they pack, their insurance covers it all! You need to confirm what they will dismantle in advance but they took apart our bed and the MFI wardrobes from hell (shells wouldn't fit through the bedroom door!) and reassembled them!

We really did little in the way of preparation in the run up to the move, I was flapping the night before convinced I should be doing something but the guys arrived the following morning and quite literally stripped the place like a swarm of locusts! One tip though, I'd kept some basic stuff out to see us through the day but obviously you're unlikely to unpack everything immediately and I found it frustrating at times not knowing exactly what was in each box (I'd not really thought through what I might be needing over the few days after the move...........hairdryer etc, not exactly life or death!). The guys did label the boxes but with fairly general descriptions!

Would defintiely go for the full packing service again without a doubt, with an 11 month old in the equation it definitely saved my sanity!

We could have paid them extra to pack, but didn't as we wanted to sort stuff as we packed. They did take apart and reassemble furniture that wouldn't go out of the house otherwise though, I think it was our bed, cot and wardrobe, dining table would go whole.

As we were packing ourselves, they gave us boxes a week or two before to pack into.

We have always packed ourselves as my husband is a bit of a control freak. Having a removals company do the actual moving bit though is definately worthwhile!

Our removals firm (when we finally move) is going to come in the day before the move and pack the house up for us. They wont dismantle furniture like beds and dining tables, thats left to us to sort out.

Thanks everyone. I might have a clearout (which I need) and then get them to pack. Will get some quotes. What about the loft? Ugh!
