Returning Clothes

Rod, 16 March, 2012 at 09:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Hi all,

I bought a top last week from New Look. I really love it, its a sheer vest type top with skulls printed on it.

Anyway, wore it at the weekend and last night i did a few loads of washing. the care instructions said machine wash up to 4odeg. I washed the clothes, as I always do, at 30.

Its come out covered in holes! Is this a case for me to return it as faulty goods? I havent done anything wrong to it for it to do this. Nothing else in that load has holes in it...?

I would ideally like to exchange it for another one and I would then just hand wash it.

Any ideas? Will they let me return it?

They might do if you get someone nice. Worth a go I would have thought. Just be polite but firm and say that you like the top, but don't expect to find holes after one wash and following the care instructions.

You will probably have more luck wanting a replacement rather than a refund, so that's a good start there.

Just a thought, if it's a sheer top - could it have caught on a buckle or something like that?

Yeah definately take it back, if you have no receipt they will let you exchange it or if you do then they will give you the money back. As its a manufacturers fault.

I've got the reciept. Its got holes in different places and some of it has gone that weird hardness that happens when you wash something too hot? But it says 40 on the label and I washed it at 30 so not sure why its happened.

I will go in there soon

Just go in then and say you followed the washing instructions exactly, if you tell them you did it at 30 and not 40 then they may refuse you.

Yes I would say thats grounds to take it back as faulty, they shouldn't put wash at 40 on the label if it needs handwashing!

I've worked in retail all my life.

If (which you did) wash it as per the instructions you are entitled to a refund/exchange, as you just want a replacement top it should be a lot easier to sort out so I doubt you'll have problems.

If you do get an unhelpful assistant don't be afraid to request to speak to the manager, 4 golden words 'sale of goods act'

How did you get on October? I brought a tshirt about a month ago from New Look its cream with black birds printed all over it, I wore it once and washed it at the right temperature and the birds are now grey! completly faded! x

You should be fine O11, it's not as though you're trying to return a book that has been blatantly read like I get where I work....

I had a massive row with the woman in there! She looked at it, asked me if I'd ironed it. I said no. And she then proceeded to tell me i was lying. 'Well these are iron marks, you've obviously ironed it'

I was flabbergasted!! I told her that i hadnt touched it with an iron, and even if I had, the label said it was ok to warm iron. In the end 'as a goodwill gesture' she allowed me to exchange, which is all i wanted! BUT they had sold out fo the particular top I wanted so i ended up paying another £3 for a similar one.

I was fuming!!! How DARE she tell me i'm lying, what happened to the customer is always right?! Grrrrr....

Did you get the name of the woman who argued with you? I'd be tempted to write a letter of complaint about the way your complaint was dealt with! (does that sound a bit excessive?)

She was probably annoyed because it was going to affect their sales totals for the day or something similar but there's no need to accuse you of lying

I am thinking about complaining actually. I was so shocked! I took a £175 dress back to Karen Millen once because a seam had come away and she gave me a full refund no questions asked. Yet i go in New look about a £9.99 top and get treated like a liar! I was sooo angry.
