Returning faulty goods with no receipt - where do I stand?

Chunk, 6 July, 2008 at 08:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I bought Mr Chunk a game for the Wii for his birthday from HMV. Mr Chunk has just informed me that there is a disc error, and he's checked the Wii with other games and it's working fine. I've hunted everywhere for the receipt but I must've chucked it without realising. I paid by cash.
It's going to look dodgy if I just go back and ask for a refund, isn't it? Does anyone know the procedure?

I don't think the shop is obliged to give you a refund without a receipt. Most shops will exchange faulty goods without one though as a goodwill gesture but I'm not sre when it comes to things like computer games - I guess all you can do is ask!

Thanks, that's what I thought. Hmmph. ? I don't mind an exchange though, so I'll give them a ring tomorrow.

I think they will offer to exchange it for the same game, which is fair enough

Thanks. I'll be happy with an exchange. I'll ask Mr C to do it though as I'm scared of confrontation ??

It doesn't have to be a receipt, proof of purchase is what's needed, so that could be a credit/debit card statement.

But the hard bit would be proving it's that game that you bought for £39.99 or whatever it was.

Thanks Sare, I paid by cash though, so have absolutely nothing to prove that I bought it there. I'm annoyed with myself as I never normally throw receipts away for things like that. I've still got the receipt for the Wii itself and we bought that two years ago ?

I don't know if all shops are the same, but this happened to me once (I think it was a music shop as well) but they scan the bar code through and it tells them if it was bought at their shop or not. It was quite a while ago but I'm positive that's what happened with me - I could only do an exchange though.
