Returning to work after a long time

japonica candlewick, 25 June, 2009 at 11:37 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I really need to return to work as we need the money. My last job was over 12 years ago as I've had children. I'm so scared about getting a job. Its not the actual job its the interview really. My previous job was a nanny so the interviews were in houses so slightly more relaxed. Also my lack of confidence has got worse over the years. My H doesn't understand how difficult it is for me. He seems to think as I'm an adult it should easy for me. I had a cry about this morning which seems so pathetic. I couldn't even get a job in asda as they do group interviews and I just couldn't stand up and talk in front of loads of people. I think I need to win the lottery so save me having to get a job ??

Think of it like going to a new playgroup ( I know they're bad too) but once you are over the first hurdle they're never as bad a you imagine.

Buy yourself some cheap confidence clothes from Matalan or similar and grit your teeth. I went for a job interview a few months ago and had to wait ages for the interviewer literally shaking with fear, but once I got in there it was fine (although I didn't get the job). Maybe you could go to couple of interviews thinking that they don't really matter? It might help relieve some of the pressure of the situation.

I have a problem with talking to people, even people I know so kind of know where you are coming from.

All interviews are nerve racking. But remember its a two way thing - you are deciding whether you'll fit in working there too. If I didn't hit it off with the people interviewing me then I'd think twice about taking a job.

There are training courses that will help you brush up your interview skills - have you contacted your job centre they sometimes do courses to help people back into work who've had a career break like you have. (Or they used to).

Thanks to you both for replying. I never went to playgroups as a parent although I did when I was a nanny?. I shall have a look into training courses. Just got to sort a cv out now.

My break from work wasn't quite as long as yours - about 3 years, but it' still hard to consider that you still have any skills that an employer might want. However, now that I'm back at work, I wondered what I was worried about.

My tip for interviews is not to care too much - try to think of them as an opportunity to meet someone new who's interested in what you've got to say. I've always approached interviews this way, and it's made them quite enjoyable ?. I've almost always got the job this way, and it's usually because my future employer says they've felt a "connection" and that I should fit in just fine.

Best of luck - think of all the multi-tasking skills you've built up over these years!!!
