Revenge on a Call Centre - had an evil impulse and acted on it!

Jasmine05, 11 June, 2008 at 15:37 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

Just got a call off a call centre for the umpteenth time this month trying to sell my husband extra cover for our sky which we don't want.

My issues are:

1. Sky is in MY name not his so I get very annoyed when they get that detail wrong to start with

2. I've repeatedly told Sky not to pass on our phone number for sales calls or I will cancel (of course I won't cos we can't get cable round here but they don't know that)

3. We are ex directory and registered with the TPS

So I tell this stroppy girl twice that we keep telling them we are not interested and she shouts, 'Fine whatever' and hangs up just as I'm about ot explain that I have instructed Sky not to pass on details. Unfortunately for them I have caller display and their number was displayed, and being ex-directory, well our number comes up as withheld, so I've just rung them up and said 'I'm going to hang up on you now and see how you like it' and hung up.

Beware the bored pregnant woman with time on her hands!!!! ?

Bit ? that I was so stroppy back but a teensy part of me does feel quite good.

I really have no issues against call centre staff but have to draw the line at being shouted at and hung up on.

Dont be surprised if you get another call then as even if your number is withheld depending on the types of phones they use, your number can be displayed. It would be in the centre I work in.

Ah, I can't I've deleted it to remove the temptation to do it again and someone's called since then, so it's off the bt last call thing.

Edited to say I don't mind if I get another call - I'm saying that I don't even have Sky next time, hee hee.

I'm sick of these too, a new box is only £65.

One the subject of call centres, why do so many obviously Indian call centre types say that there name is Richard or David etc?

I actually think if you have are registered with the TPS it is illegal for them to call you out the blue and try to sell you something. I know in the past when I have told them we are registered they have always hunp up quick sharpish.

I had a rant at a call centre worker last year who was trying to sell me that women's cancer cover. I was really stressed and he was going on about me not caring for my family if I didn't want to have cover against the women's cancers. We got into an arguement about other cancers being more prevalent nowadays than cervical cancer due to the screening program and he told me they shouldn't matter to me as much because they weren't women's cancers. I pointed out that neither is breast cancer, he told me I was lying! I told him that over 100 men a year get breast cancer and he wouldn't believe me, so I told him that the reason I knew this is that I was writing up a PhD thesis on cancer research which he was distracting me from and he hung up on me. I got the same call two days later, I can't believe they hadn't black listed me.

Totally shocked that companies use the hard sell for cancer! I think I am quite naive. Good for you for blinding him with science.

I get annoyed with the 'can I speak to the homeowner please' calls. I say 'if you can't be bothered to find out our names then you clearly have nothing useful to say to me' and hang up. But, to be fair I always tell people I am going to hang up on them before I do it.

I once watched a programme about Indian call centre workers, I think they are told to do this, so that people think they are English.

We get a call once a year from Sky re: extra cover. We tell them everytime that we only bought the sky card from them as they wouldn't sell us a box as we are on a communal dish. But it is only once a year.

When we get callers asking to "speak to the homeowner" i usually say, "sure, just let me get the number for the local council". They usually hang up then.

The best one we have done to a cold caller is as follows (I think i have told this before)

Phone rings, OH answers the phone in another room. 45 mins later I hear him laugh so I go and find out why.

Turns out the caller was from a conservatory company. So OH said "yeah ok, I'm interested but we've got a bit of a gap from the back wall to the ground."

Guy says "that's no problem, we'll sort that later." Gives OH the whole spiel and just as the guy says "so when can we come round to measure up" OH says "just how big a gap can you deal with"

"A couple of feet, we can put a step or 2 in"

"Exactly how far can you do as it is a big gap?" OH replies.

"2 or 3 feet, but we can check that out when we get there."

OH replies, well I think our gap is a bit bigger than that."

Silence then, "So how big is it?"

"About 150 feet. We stay in a towerblock. I wouldn't call anyone else in MrBlobby Court* as it is all a towerblock. Maybe next time do a bit of research first."

"Um, ok. Sorry for wasting your time." Hangs up.

for UK based call centres, phone names. Used to work for a holiday company where there were many Sarahs, Tracys, Lisas, whatever. So instead of answering with their own name, they were each given a unique phone name. Thus when the customer phoned back to say 'I was talking to x', they knew who they meant. Hence lots of very odd names.

Whenever I get a sales call then I just put the phone down somewhere. I don't hang up on the call, just put the phone down and don't speak to them. You can hear them saying "hello, hello"

It is actually quite good fun and I seem to get less sales calls these days too

I have to do four hours a week in the call centre. There's a Dominic on the 'phones, who goes by 'Nick' for reasons best known to himself so I had to work up a 'phone name'. I asked if I could be Husiff. They didn't find it amusing.

Regarding the TPS, there's a get out clause there, companies who you already have a service from (in this case Sky) are allowed to deliver you 'service' calls.

I feel quite sorry for call centre workers. Sure, cold calling is annoying, but at least they're working for a living.

My sister worked in a call centre for a band and eventually had to leave due to stress as she got such abuse from the customers, and they were calling her!

I just say thanks but no thanks - after all they're being paid for their time, I'm not being paid to "get revenge" on them or call them back or anything like that!
