Ring help!

Josiep00, 8 September, 2010 at 10:27 Posted on Planning 0 20

So a nice man came over last night to show us a lot of rings. Lots of fun looking at shiney things.

I saw one I quite liked in style - but as it needed to be shaped to fit my ring and had 10 lil diamonds on it it came to £900 which is way over what I wanted to spend. The nice man tried to help me think of ideas how I could cut down on this, fewer diamonds/space out the diamonds etc. But as it has to be shaped it still wouldn't be as cheap as I wanted it.

Anyone know company that is reasonable on shaping/lil diamonds? I'm in the Essex area but can travel to London.

I will probably have to go for something plainer - but it's hard to know if I'll definately like it as my ring is an odd shape so noone has rings that fit it for viewing purposes ☹️ OH says we should just get the expensive ring - silly man!

    Hey Josie,

Do you want to send me an email with some details of the ring? I can trawl through the system and see how we can make it cheaper for you, £900 does seem like a lot... What metal were you going for?

Did he tell you that you could add the diamonds later? That would keep the cost down for a start...

    Hope I can help...

    Laura x

    Hi Laura

The gentleman was very helpful and did keep trying to find ways to make it cheaper. We ended up looking at 14ct white gold as my ER is 18ct.

Style code is SR934. 3mm size N. 10diamonds 15mm (I think thats what the notes say) channel diamonds touching, shaping code 4. Which added up to £845.

He did go through lots of different ideas, including maybe only having half the diamonds for now and adding more on later. But as none of the rings actually sat with mine it is very hard to imagine how they will look IYSWIM. We did talk direct debit, but as our wedding is in December we were told we'd have to pay by then.

I think I'm just going to look for plainer shaped ones - but as said, it's just had to imagine them sat with my ring without actually seeing it. Damn my awkward shaped ring!

Thanks for your time though ?

You're very welcome. I don't want to seem like I'm being pushy, but I'd love to be able to help you get something sorted... If you can send me a pic of your ER I can see if we have anything else that might be suitable for you.... I know the advisor last night would've bought hundreds of rings for you to look at, but believe it or not, we do have more!

We also have some 'special' rings which suit oddly shaped ER's, so you never know, there might be one for you.

If not, then I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that you can find your perfect ring elsewhere ?

    Ours are simular but cheaper.

My OH has this from a local independent jeweler in Milton Keynes for £550.

Mine will be 2.5mm to match my ER and is £670

I feel your pain Josie. The one I want is £900. As we're just buying our first house I am going to hold off ordering it until nearer the time so I can reassess the finances and ensure we can afford it.

I obviously don't want to pry but is there no way you could afford this by maybe cutting down on something else? Maybe your OH have a cheaper ring?

My theory on our wedding is we spend a lot on photos, dress and rings as these are the things you're left with at the end of the day.

Thats our theory too GemmaLouise.! But we have got what we wanted by shopping around - OHs ring is very simular to one in Goldsmiths which they were selling for £1,100 and while we said we wouldn't skimp on rings that is a lot.

I'd try a trip to Hatton Gardens or Birminghams Jewelry quarter if possible?

I agree, it's worth shopping around. I cannot comment on Smooch as I've never consulted with them but in my experience high street chains are much more expensive (and I'm sorry to say usually poorer quality) than going to an independent jeweller.

My friends got beautiful rings in the Jewellery Quarter.

I had same problem.. my OH decided to get the biggest sparkly engagement ring he could afford and didnt think about my WR.. I couldnt find anywhere that would make one for less than 1100 due to the size and shape it would have to be.. ive finally decided not to wear them together and just get a nice normal WR and wear ER on other hand.. Not ideal but if you cant afford it its always an option xxx

Thanks for sharing in my pain ladies. I think a trip to Hatton Garden could be a good idea.

In happier news I just found out my dress is at the shops ready to try on - woo! That made me smile through the ring pain ?

I didn't get the call - I called them as they said it would be there in August, when I told her my name she was like "Oh it's here" I started to squel down the phone with joy. Completely forgot I was frustrated they hadn't called me ?

Not sure I will be much help, but deafinately shop arround. We went to the jewellery quarter in B'ham for our rings this allowed us to compare lots of prices all at the same time and lots of them carry a stock of shaped bands to allow you to get an idea of how different things might sit with your ring. I could have had a shaped band but prefered a stright one after trying next to my ER.

Even though OH and I are just having plain gold bands I saved £500 by shopping around!

This is why Hitched is an EXCELLENT thing. I can share with you my ring designer based in Essex (colchester) called CJ Brookes!

He is doing my ring with Diamonds and cut shape to fit my ER for £195 with three diamonds!

He did my friends wedding band and it is amazing!

Kayl - soonest I could book was 18th Sept. a week and a half away! Grrrr, have to wait so long.

But another good thing happened, Some veils I ordered to try on have arrived, will see if I like them tonight when I get home ? so even though I was grumpy about rings this morning I am quite content now.

Sorry about that. I've just spoken to Alper and he has apologised. He didn't get your message until late last night and has been super busy all day. He will contact you ASAP to arrange another time for you.

Have you tried bluenile? My engagement ring came from there and I think it is where I will be looking for wedding rings. You can create your own design to a certain extent. Worth a try.
