Rings!!

lauren_448, 4 January, 2014 at 20:24 Posted on Planning 0 8

If you wouldn't mind would anyone mind telling me how much your wedding rings cost? My OH and I went shopping today and for mine we were quoted £150 for a 2mm plain 18carat white gold band, but then for my OH we were quoted £633! He wants a 7mm 18carat white gold plain band but I can't quite believe that it costs that much! that's almost £800 for 2 rings!!

Anyone got any suggestions or ideas of how to cut the price down?

My wedding ring cost £275 it is a 9ct white gold ring with a few diamonds from Ernest Jones. OH's ring cost £175 and is a plain 9ct white gold band also from Ernest Jones. We got 10% off of each ring as they had an offer on 10% off wedding bands, not sure if that is a permanent or limited offer.

Is it worth looking at getting your OH's ring custom made?

H had a palladium ring as he needed something hard wearing as he does lots of car maintenance. It was about £450 I think however for us the mayetial

was much more important than the colour or look.

Well, as his ring is 3.5 times the width of yours and probably contains more than 3.5 times the amount of gold (because it will probably also be a bigger size) it's not that surprising that it costs just over 4 times yours. The obvious solution would be for him to have a narrower band.

Ours were £1100 for the two, but that's because we did a ring-making workshop and made them for each other. Mine is 2.5mm, his is 4, both plain 18ct white gold bands.

It's hard to look up prices without knowing what size (around, not thickness) he needs. BUT Alba Rose, for Palladium, 7mm thickness, comfort fit, size T (generically chosen size), is just £364....

A matching 3mm, size M for you would just be £134.

So total of £498.. which is a bit better.

Those were both medium weight, if you go light weight, His: £256, Yours: £98, Total just £354

Mine was about £20 but thats because it was made of tungsten carbide as I needed something hard wearing. I think you should consider going to talk to someone about getting custom made. It costs you nothing but a little time to get a quote. I got my engagement ring from a shop in Hatton Garden and it cost me far less than the same thing would have from a shop. Plus I got the added bonus of designing my own ring!

My OH chose a titanium ring and it was £100. Mine is platinum and was closer to £400. I secretly like his better because it looks cool.

My partners ring is palladium and my own ring is platinum with half round of diamonds. Real price would have been £1500 for the two but got a discount taking it to £1200 as it was the same jewellers he bought my engagement ring.

18 white is pretty dense, and it's an expensive metal. £633 for 7mm is not a bad price, believe it or not! You could look at going for a lightweight ring - usually people quote for medium weight. What sort of profile was it? some are thicker - and therefore more expensive - than others.

As someone else has said, palladium is a good alternative metal; costs 2/3 to 3/4 the price of 18 white. Or have a look at lighterweight bands, different profiles or thicknesses. It's all about the weight, I'm afraid!
