Round or Square?

far2calm, 14 October, 2011 at 13:00 Posted on Planning 0 21

Now I know this isnt going to be the biggest decision I'm ever going to make BUT I can decided whether to have a round or square wedding cake!?!

Lucky enough to have a friend of my Mam's making it and OH Auntie icing/decorating it.

Also looking for some inspiration, nothing jumping out when searching the net, so a few flashes of what some of you had/having would be a great help, thanks.

Believe it or not, I can't decide this either. I thought I had a clear idea in mind and then when my cake lady asked me the 'square or round' question, my mind went blank and the more I thought about it, the less I was certain!

I've got a while to decide, but I just don't know what would look better. i think it will come down to what style of cake you are having. If it's quite plain, the shape will look fine either way, so it's just a matter of preference. If you have a design or style in mind, you might want to look up pics of similar ones and see what you think works better.

Sorry if that's not much help, but I'm still stuck with this myself!!

    Good luck picking Smiley smile

We couldn't decide either but when we went to a wedding fair a few weeks ago, we saw a three tier cake with the bottom two tiers being square and the top one being round. We really loved it, so we're going for that design - best of both worlds!

Square is easier to cut up. Round cakes are nice and traditional and I suppose square cakes are a bit more modern. We are having a round cake but I also like the whimsical cakes which look all wonkey.

I'd never even considered this!! I just automatically thought round.

I'm planning to make my own cake and basing it on this Peggy Porschen one although I doubt my roses will be that perfect!

I would imagine you would get more portions from a Square cake so a saving.

Oooo now I've never thought about what's best when handing it out. Plan is for it to be given at the evening do, which is look like 250-300 guests.

    Hhhhmmmm, how many tiers ?

I for some reason wanted a square and didn't even look at rounds but I don't know why, possibly because square is more modern. We had this

I was thinking about this a few months ago too. I like the idea of round and square together. There are loads of ideas/images on google.

Here are a few I have copied and pasted:

Think we will go for something similar to the second one, in colours to match our day.

We had an 8,10,12 square cake for ~95 at our evening do and it was far too big really. We saved the top tier, and they probably got through just over half the bottom tier and just under half the middle tier. I am still eating it now, even after sending out pieces for all my friends/rellies who couldn't come!

    I can't decide either!

I want square because in our design it looks better square:

But I love the wooden stand in the pic above and tree slice would look daft square!!!

Round is easier to cover than square and you don't need enough cake for all your guests, not everyone will eat it.

We're going to need a big cake because the day after our wedding (and our 3 receptions lol) were having ANOTHER church service with a blessing on Sunday morning mass followed by ANOTHER reception at the back of the church and hand out cake to the congregation

im starting to think this "small family" wedding is turning into a monster. 100+ church guests and champagne and canope reception for 100 followed by a wedding breakfast for 45 followed by an evening reception for 65 folowed the next day by a wine and cake reception for 150 lol

    oh dear.
