Rude colleague response to invite!

Emma158, 5 July, 2013 at 10:29 Posted on Planning 0 13

I'm silently fuming at my desk so needed to vent! I just handed out evening invites to 3 work colleagues and 2 were really sweet but one said, 'I would actually like to see you get married really but.....anyway that's nice' ARGH! I want to take the invite back!!!!!

Are you sure she wasn't being nice?

I don't understand why she/he would say that. Did the person say anything else?

She's well known for her snide remarks and I guess she possibly meant it in a nice way as in she would like to see us get married but the tone and the fact she even said it made me feel uncomfortable.

It could just be really clumsy. Saying that she would like to see you get married is a lovely sentiment, but then where does she go from there? I suspect she said the first part without registering how rubbish any second part would sound.

Are you getting married in a church? If so, could you invite her along to the ceremony if she wants to come?

Also, it could have been worse...

"I actually would have liked to have been invited to your meal.....but this is nice anyway".

So at least the bit she expressed a desire to be part of is the right bit of the day!

Is this working? Do you feel any better yet?

I think you're probably right. I'm possibly being oversensitive but I just think she shouldn't have said anything other than thank you. We are getting married at the same place as the reception so she won't be able to come along. She did also make a comment about it being a bit far away for most of my colleagues, which I thought was slightly unnecessary. She probably is just a bit clumsy rather than malicious but it still grates. (Especially as now I'm panicking about her reaction when she finds out one of my colleagues is invited to the whole day....)

I am actually feeling a little better purely because that bit made me laugh!

I reckon she's done what Footlong said - started the sentence without thinking it through.

I'm guilty of this quite a bit ?

I know someone who is a bit like this, I think she means well but just can't control her impulse/has no filter before speaking. Sometimes people just have developed like that where they don't feedback social cues to themselves, I wouldn't let it get to you.

When I gave my invites out my manager didn't even acknowledge that I gave him an invite, he just put it on the side, didn't open it and didn't say thank you! Really want to uninvite him now! Everybody else was really excited by them!

I get to avoid inviting colleagues now. I left one job where I would have felt obliged to invite at least a few of them having been there a few years but having started a new job with less than a year to go I don't think anyone would expect an invite when everything is already booked. There are only 3 of us in the office though so if I decide I like them I might squeeze them in.
