runners - breakfast?

Gone With The Whinge, 15 February, 2009 at 19:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I am starting out with the running this week [wibble]. I am going to take it very easy to begin with (will probably run, in total, for about five minutes out of 20) but since it will be in the morning, I was wondering whether to have breakfast before or after? I usually have seeded toast or porridge; those will do, no?

TIA.

I don't bother eating before a run if I run first thing, unless I'm doing more than about 10k. When you're starting out I think cramp/needing the loo/feeling full and "sloshy" is far more likely to be an issue than needing the calories. If you do eat, wait at least 45 mins before you set out. I suppose you could try having a banana or something just before you go but it's not really necessary.

Either of those would do just fine. I would sometimes have banana with my toast though this can result in banana burps. Good for energy though.

Perhaps avoid having OJ as this can be a bit harsh before running.

Good luck, I'm just getting back into it after having the baby and it is fab.

Edited due to type and also to agree with Sophie that breakfast may not be totally necessary with the beginners shorter runs. I tend to have something light as I can feel queasy if I don't.

Porage made with water, banana and honey saw me through my 12 miles this morning, with an energy gel along the way.

Like Sophie, I don't need to eat anything up to about 10k distance and I can run that first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Thanks. I think I'll leave the food til afterwards then, so I feel 'lighter' while I'm out.

You could try an energy drink - I find it helps with an energy boost or my first-thing workouts are very lethargic. I use Science in Sport ones. The other thing is make sure you have a decent meal the night before, maybe even a snack before bed so that the tank isn't entirely empty. Trial and error - what works for you won't necessarily work for everyone.
