Runners toes (TMI)

Skittalie, 20 June, 2009 at 12:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I have two beautiful black toes from the 10K I did, they look awful (no sandals for me this summer) and I've been warned that they will drop off at some point, I think one is coming away from the skin and I'm dreading it coming off, I'm totally squeemish about anything to do with me if it were H I'd be ok I feel faint looking at it closely!

Has anyone else had one? if it comes off is it going to come off in one piece? Will the nail grow back normal? How long will it take ish? These are probably how long is a piece of string questions but has anyone got any experience of them?

The same happened to me earlier in the year. Had a bit of a panic as had bought peep toe sandals for my brother's wedding which would have look fantastic with a missing toe nail!! It dropped of in one piece and grew back quite quickly - probablly a couple of weeks- so was ok.

Only thing I've noticed is that it grew back quite thin and almost like it was dead if that makes sense. It had since gone black again and looks like I'll be missing a nail again soon! I think it's quite common in runners and walkers.

As a kind of aside, the woman who did a manicure for me last week was telling us how she had been doing a pedicure for someone who did a lot of hill walking and her big toenail came off in her hand ?. She said she panicked and was trying to work out if she could put it back on with nail glue without the client noticing!!

It doesn't hurt when it comes off, and often the new nail has grown underneath anyway. Are your running shoes big enough? I'm surprised that you'd get a black toenail after only a 10k race.

    Hello

I've trained for 3 half marathons and lost 3 different toe nails! In each case the existing toe nail hasn't dropped off until a new one has grown underneath, and have had pedicaures and you wouldn't know which the missing toe nail was now. I'm also very sqeamish, but the whole nail just comes off in one piece, it doesn't hurt ,so is nothing to worry about,

I'm hoping there's a new one underneath then, I've had to cover it up as it's only attached in the middle atm and it's making me queasy even thinking about it

My trainers are great, unfortunately I pulled my socks too tight when I did the 10K so I didn't get blisters, no blisters just black toes, I have learned my lesson

Thanks for the replies, puts my mind at rest

WEES about the nail growing back. In my experience this is almost always because your toenails are too long.

I lost a toenail when I had my old trainers - they were the same size as "fashion shoes" but now I wear a full size bigger and I don't seem to be having any problems. And it's great having trainers that aren't riddled with holes and having to remember to only wear white socks with them! ?
