Runners Updates

Pop Up Pundit, 30 March, 2008 at 13:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 52

Hello fellow runners - come and tell your Auntie PuP about this week's running successes, injuries and challenges.

I got unbelievably wet and demoralised this morning, grinding out 15 soggy miles in the pissing rain. I might have cried a little when I finally finished ? I got the hiccups just as I was finishing and every hic was jolting my poor sore muscles.

Feeling relatively chipper now, but my thighs are on fire (not in a good way) and I'm not sure that i've got the energy to do anything much more today...

I done my 5th run on wednesday. We did 4.11 miles. Very pleased with my progress as I've never been a runner. Going again tomorrow night.

4 miles on your 5th run is brilliant, well done Liz!

not to be a wet blanket, but do be careful that you don't overdo it and injure yourself though - give your body time to get used to it.

Wonderful weather this morning - managed 3 miles and seem to be getting closer to 11 minute miles. Knee seems to be holding up too, which is good. Would have been faster were it not for the fact that half way through I was absolutely dying for a gypsy's ?

I am in full training mode for my first half marathon, in Phuket in June. It's 11 weeks away. I'm proud of myself this week because I managed a proper week of training. Started with a body balance class on Monday, a 6km run Tuesday, swimming Wednesday, 6km tempo run Thursday, day off Friday, 40 mins walking Saturday and 10km tonight which felt quite comfortable.

Next week's the big challenge as my milage goes up by a mile which will be the most I've ever run ?

But a 15 mile run! How I hope to be able to say that one day ?

<ignorant icon> Gypsy's? Wassat then? Good-o on closing in on the 11 minute miles, that's a huge improvement from when you started, isn't it?

    Rhyming slang - gypsy's kiss ?

Yeah, my mile times keep on improving. Have come down by about a minute although my second/third miles are slower as my pacing isn't quite right yet. Average is about 12 min miles though, which would mean a 10k finish of 1:12 - well ahead of any expectations! With my joints holding up it's jut my fitness that needs to improve and I wasn't helped by a cold earlier this week. Hopefully won't be quite as out of breath for another 3 miler next weekend.

I'm on a diet too ? Last week I worked on the principle that so much running meant I could eat whatever I fancied so I had fish and chips washed down with 3 pints of lager two days in a row. I put on 4 lbs ? I've lost a stone and a half this year and I really don't want to bugger up all that effort...

Am back in the runners clique again having to shelve my membership with a sore knee and three weeks off for a skiing holiday!

Knee held up really well at skiing and have now had two visits with a physiotherapist who has identified some tightness and old scar tissue in the ligaments which she's given me exercises for. Says it's nothing major and should, with stretches etc get easier as my knees get used to running as long as I don't over do it.

So big smiles all round I was out again yesterday and loved loved loved it. I went a week back on the training programme and restarted week 3 (so nothing as impressive as you lot with your lots of miles business!) and knee has so far held up fine ?

Baron - can I ask a personal question? - tell me to bog off if you like but I think you said you were also looking at losing weight - have you managed to lose much through the running? As I said I had 3 weeks off running with a week of (not very energetic) skiing and drank like a fish and ate loads of bad stuff but have managed to lose 7lbs. I can only think it's from the previous few weeks running?

(I keep stepping back on the scales expecting the 7lbs to have reappeared as I can't really believe it's gone!

Think I'm a little way behind most of you but I ran my first continuous mile today in 10:38, which I was quite proud of. My 2 mile time, which included 2 mins of walking, was 22:19 which was great considering that 2 weeks ago I did it in 25:17.

Next Sunday I am meant to run 2 continuous miles according to my training plan, and I'm really not sure this is do-able considering that my training plan for this week is 12 minutes running at a time. Would appreciate any opinions?

Mrs Eff - I don't actually know how much weight I've lost ? I made a conscious decision not to get on the scales as the aim was to run the whole 10k without making an arse out of myself. I have been eating sensibly though - no more than about 2,000 kcal per day (roughly - I'm not being anal and counting every last thing) and I've been very easy on the booze. What I can tell you is that I have lost a hell of a lot of inches. My suit trousers are falling down (oh, if only I could get away with braces in the office) and I'm getting into clothes I haven't worn for a long time.

?As long as you don't have to resort to sock braces!

That's great news - well done!- I'm conscious of the scales as I'm also doing weightwatchers but hopefully another stone off and I can leave that alone and carry on as you are with a decent diet and lots of miles on the clock.

Mrs Eff - I've been running properly for just over a year and I've lost nearly a stone. But I've lost more in inches. My shape just keeps changing even though my weight now rarely moves. I buy jeans in the next size down and 2 months later they start falling off me. It's great!

MQ, that's really good to bring it in by 3 minutes in the space of 2 weeks. Take it easy on the 2 continuous miles - or if you really don't think its on, can you take a short walking break? Give it a whirl though, you might surprise yourself!

Sorry for the delay, we had to go to town. I am very pleased. I did have 3 x 30 second burst of walking quickly just to sort my breathing out but I'm still happy.

Can't wait until tomorrow, I'm really enjoying it.

I think that will be the plan - take it fairly slowly, see how far I get and if I really have to, have a short walking break. You're right though, it probably won't be as hard as I think - quite often I'll get halfway through a run and think I might have to give up, but then try and push on anyway and find it actually gets easier.

Did 5.5 miles on Thursday night was very proud of myself afterwards as I managed it without collapsing in a heap on the floor, did it in just over an hour. I am off out again on Tuesday, won't be quite so long maybe 5km.

I've just had a huge pub lunch with sticky toffee pudding, so as soon as I feel I can move again, I should go out for a run. Hopefully 4 miles, probably at about 6ish tonight.

If I haven't reported back by 7pm, please shout at me as it means I haven't been out!

Having run very intermittently this year, I am going to get properly into training this week. Goal: to find a 10k in May and do sub-55.

I did 5 miles this morning, took me 52 minutes. Mostly 10 ish minute miles with an 11.30 thrown in. It was hard going and I'm not sure why. Legs are fine, I don't know if it's just that I'm not used to the distance again yet or if I'm unfit (but I don't think I am).
Still, on target to do the 10k in about an hour (in 3 weeks time).

My main grumble is that it was too hot and sunny, I think I'm a winter runner by nature.

I am really depressed about my running. I don't seem to be able to actually run for more than 10 minutes, then walk a bit, then run more. 8 weeks in I am failing in my programme. I am finding this really demotivating. Am thinking of chatting to a personal trainer I know about it, to see if she can give me a boost

What's the problem, Lois, is it your legs that slow you down, or your lungs? After 8 weeks, that does sound still pretty good, I have to say. There are people who run-walk their whole lives and wouldn't do it any other way. There are pretty sound arguments for it, too.

A personal trainer is a great idea by the way, they can really help to motivate and get you on course, even with just a couple of sessions. If there's something in your posture or technique that's holding you back, they can also help you with that (obviously you'd want one that's clued up about running).

Lois, my first reaction to that would be that you are running too fast. Have you tried slowing down? Basically you should be feeling about the same at minute 10 as at minute 3 - the first two or 3 minutes are always tough as your heart rate gets up.

Sophie's probably right. A mistake I made when I was first starting out and it's only now I'm finding a more natural rhythm, although I still don't have it quite right.

    Can I join in?

Well done to everybody for you achievements this week - I have been lurking for a while and been impressed with what I've seen.

A brief history... I used to run about 5K fairly regulary but had got out of shape. Since Jan this year I have been back in the gym, slowly building myself back up and today...

    <drumroll>

I have just done 10K in 57 minutes which I am very, very pleased with.

I'm going to try and keep going with a 10K once a week and at least one 6K when I can squeeze it in, probably weekday evenings. I also need to start running outside now the evenings are lighter.

Oh and as a consequence, I have lost 10lbs and am now the same weight I was when I got married 3 years ago. Maybe I'm starting to live up to my username?

Oh and lots of deep heat vibes for those with injuries.

Not that I can give a professional opinion but I was stuck for ages and what made the change was slowing down (from 8.5 to 7.5 on the treadmill) and running at a different time of day. I can run relatively easy at 10am but 6pm i struggle.
