Running advice (total beginner)

Skittalie, 19 January, 2009 at 10:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Ok so I’ve signed up for the great Manchester run ARGH, I’m so not a runner and totally unfit

Can anyone recommend any good unfit to 10K training programs? Google brought up loads, which ones are best?

I think the cancer research website have some good training programmes. I have a programme for training for a 10km that Ruthann worked out for me but you need to be able to run 3km to start it.

    Hi

I've just started the Couch Potato to 5K in 9 weeks - I know it's not 10K but it's a start. I've been out twice and will be going out again tomorrow evening. They recommend starting with 30 mins 3 times a week, starting with a brisk 5 min walk and then jog 60 secs and walk 90 secs (1st week) and gradually increasing. The plan I'm following breaks it down week by week for 9 weeks. I am totally unfit and find the last 10 mins hard going but I am determined and would like to do a 5K this year.

Good luck and well done for taking the plunge.

Sorry, having just checked Cancer Research aren't posting programmes but I think I may have been getting it confused with BUPA anyway.

I find the Nike trainning plans to be very helpful. It takes you from zero to 5k in 6 weeks. Then this would lead onto the 10k training plan which takes you from 5k to 10k in 5 weeks. I may have managed to post a link below......but probably not!

When I first started running, I used a training plan from Race for Life. It got me up to5km in about 6 weeks. I was a complete beginner and couldn't even run for 30 seconds. But it built you up in small steps and worked for me.
