BUPA 5k is a good plan to follow

Definatly a plan. When I first started running i figured I can probably run for 30 mins, so I'll keep doing that until it gets easier then increase it- but following a plan may take longer, but it really, really helps your motivation.

I've done them a few times, going back to say, run 7 minutes walk 3 x3 whne I'm out of shape, and the feeling as you build up is great. actually running 30 minutes without hating every second.. you just can't beat the feeling!

the bupa plan is great. also get a proper pair of running shoes if you can and a good sports bra. and plan your runs- you'll probably start on 3 times a week, decide if you are doing them morning, lunchtime or evening.

    good luck

Catcat, I'm doing a 5k in September in Hyde Park - not sure where you are in the world but if London's accessible, you're very welcome to join me? I too am a chunkster and definitely not fit. On the advice of your thread yesterday, today I went out and bought a pair of Adidas Climacool trousers - they look awful, but if they help....an ENORMOUS t-shirt is the way to go, I reckon. lol. I'm going to be following the Bupa 5k plan too - do you fancy being running buddies? We can gee each other up, if you like? ?

Totally agree with using a plan. I've been using the pod runner intervals (similar to the Bupa 5k plan but I get nice little beeps telling me when to run and when I can collapse in a walk rather than watching the clock.

I've been amazed at the progress I've made. I've gone from struggling to run for 2 mins at a time to running for 25 mins no walking in 6 weeks.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do

MrsM - can you tell me more about the pod runner intervals? Where do you get them from?

I'd second and third the Bupa 5k/Pod plan.

I started last May unable to run round the block, by the end of summer I was up to 40-50 min runs and can still manage them - altho sadly I find it harder to get out now because the kids bedtime got twenty millon times harder recently.

I'd also say get your ipod on, worry not a jot about what others think, don't overdo it, enjoy.

    Here you go catcat https://www.djsteveboy.com/1day25k.html

The musc isn't really my thing but I've found it so much easier getting a beep and a change of beat telling me when to walk and when to run. Basically you just down load each week's mix, plug yourself in and off you go.

I've wanted to run for so long but even as a fit school girl would struggle to get twice around a track. Yet I can now claim that on Saturday I ran 3.5km non stop. I am so chuffed with myself but not sure I'd have been able to keep going on the tough bits without the motivaton of waiting for the beep
