RV/Motorhome rental US

Carrie74, 23 August, 2009 at 17:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Hiya. We're off to visit my brother over Easter, and are planning the rest of our holiday now. He lives in Dallas, and we'll probably stay with him for Easter weekend, then fly up to Boston for another 7/8 days, and are thinking about renting an RV and touring. There'll be me, H, and our 2 littlies - they'll be 4.5 and 2.5.

Anyone done this? Any tips on how to do it, who with, and must-sees? I've googled for various renters, but I'm not sure how it all works in terms of pricing, and how much sites will cost etc. However, I figure the States is the best placed anywhere for RV touring...

And anyone in the US know where I can find out if we'll be there over US school vacation too? Again, I've been googling, but can't seem to get a definitive answer (although I did get a listing of every college's spring break dates...But since we're not doing Daytona, I think we'll be safe!

You could try keycamp holidays. they do this kind of thing i think now in the US.

We were going to do this next year.

We were going to book with Cruise America, they have all different sizes of RV's to rent. We were going to have one of the real big ones (size not an issue for us as the OH is a HGV Driver).

The earlier you book the cheaper the RV hire is. It does go up alot the later you leave it to book. We were going to arrange our own parking as we went along but you can pre-book in advance no idea if its cheaper or not.

Our original plan was 9 nights parked in Daytona (for the motor racing in feb), and then travel round Florida. One of the things that changed our minds was unless we hired another car to tow along whilst parked in Daytona we would be efffectively trapped inside the camp ground.

I think we will leave it a couple of years then hire one to travel round California and Nevada.

Thanks both, that's really useful. Jackie - one of the reasons we're thinking of doing this (without a tow car) is because it's so much more accessible to take an RV around in the US - all the car parks are so huge etc.

We'd love to do California and Nevada too (well actually, up to Seattle and possibly Vancouver), and had planned it all out to do for honeymon, but we ran out of holiday time. We'll do it someday...

Trouble is though if we parked up at Daytona for 9 days it would be inside the Speedway and you arent allowed to leave until after the racing is over . If we didnt have a car we would be stuck there and wouldnt even be able to go to the beach or local shops etc (unless we walked).

We are sticking with hotels next year, then hopefully the year after will do the California thing , kids will be 8 and 12 then so hopefully over the "are we nearly there yet" stage.

No idea on the RV thing but have a slight clue on the school holidays. They don't do Easter in schools here (separation of Church and State) so the Spring Break are determined by each school district. (I live in a metro area of 500K and we have at least 6 school districts). So you probably won't find a general time. You could look up by the cities or countys you're planning to visit though. In general "spring break" travel I think runs anywhere from mid-Feb to mid-April.
