Ryanair plumbs new depths

Hoobygroovy, 9 April, 2008 at 22:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

"By June this year, passengers will be able to use their own mobile phones and we'll be encouraging them to make as many calls to their hearts' content," said a Ryanair spokesman.

Dreadful syntax aside, judging by the multitude of scrotes on my flight home from Dublin this evening, it'll be airborne mobile hell. How did I know they'd be one of the first to embrace this new joyful experience? [V]

    Pah.

I've always enjoyed switching off the mobile before getting on a flight. It's a total release. I fly a lot and am not looking forward to to a gaggle of voices bleating on and you know the phrase you'll hear the most...

"Hiya. Yeah, just to let you know I'm on the plane." Grrrrrrr [V]

The very idea brings me out in hives. What about on long haul? I can imagine they'd request that you don't use your phones at certain times but there's always going to be some twat that leaves it on.

Soooo many smug people calling home or their mates to gloat about going somewhere, texts going off every 3 seconds, the list is endless really isn't it.

I actually think it would tip the balance for me between going somewhere by air or staying closer to home. [:I]

I know. I get wound up enough by the people who switch on their phone the minute the plane touches down to tell someone "Yeah, just landed and waiting to get off the plane". Who needs to know that? Who? If someone's picking you up at the airport, can they not check arrival times themselves?

    And breeeathe.

Had to laugh tonight though. The guy in front of me was chatting on his phone as we walked through the police checkpoint, whereupon his attention was drawn to the "No mobiles" sign by a policewoman and he was made to switch it off until he reached the baggage hall ... some 30 ft further on. ?

Brilliant ? Just the sort of thing I take great joy in.

I don't get the "and we'll be encouraging them to make as many calls to their hearts' content". Why? What difference does it make to Ryanair? Unleeeeeees...I bet they introduce a fee to be able to use your mobile. So you've got hold baggage fee, advanced seat booking fee, mobile use fee? plus I bet they'll start carrying top up cards onboard in the inflight mag.

Society seems to be fixated on mobiles. i also dont understand why people have to turn them on the second the plane hits the runway on landing. i mean ffs, is it like missing a limb? why do you need to do that? whats the benefit, the advantage.

i suspect that the airlines will have no choice but to enforce really strict guidelines with phone use. i also hope that its banned soon after launch when someone like me nearly downs a plane due to phone rage, ie, sticking some twats mobile right up his arse at 3am on a transatlantic flight because it was ringing.

I would definitely choose an airline with a strict policy over one that lets people use their phones as they wish.

? at phone rage incidents. Just seat Naomi Campbell next to some 15 year olds for a couple of hours, that'll sort the problem.

Joking aside though, i can see some real problems with "air rage" incidents when it comes to mobile phones. hopefully it ll be prohibitively expensive for the majority.

    Oh no [V]
And if long haul flights join in peoples phones will go off with a text welcoming them to a new network every time they enter a new countries airspace.
    My worst fears realised.

What a great advert for using BMI, Flybe and Easyjet.

I just can't understand the obsession with mobiles either. On a flight last week I couldn't believe the idiot who felt he was so important he only hung up as the plane was virtually at the runway for take off. What a twat.

Can you imagine the crew trying to do their safety demonstration and people's stupid ringtones going off at the same time?

Well, no-one pays attention anyway. I get evils from the cabin crew even if I continue to read my book. FFS, you see me every frigging week!!!

God it's bad enough that they allow mobiles on buses, at least you can get off one of those.

It's not just the rintones, it's Kevin and Sandra's five kids all playing different crap, tinny music on their radio phones or whatever the feck it is they play crap music on.
